Methods and apparatus for acoustic velocity well logging. Methods may include estimating a property of an earth formation, including estimating a depth-dependent lateral tectonic strain profile for the earth formation by generating a linear-to-linear transformation constrained to map a first value of a shear wave velocity parameter of the formation to an estimated minimum value of lateral tectonic strain in at least one direction corresponding to at least one principal horizontal stress of the formation, and map a second value of the shear wave velocity parameter of the formation to an estimated maximum value of lateral tectonic strain in the at least one direction, wherein the strain values may be estimated using closure pressure. The first value of the shear wave velocity parameter may be a minimum value of shear wave slowness and the second value of the shear wave velocity parameter is a maximum value of shear wave slowness.

Estimating depth-dependent lateral tectonic strain profiles

An embodiment of a system for performing a downhole operation includes a carrier having an isolation assembly including at least one packer having a deformable element configured to isolate a section of a borehole in the earth formation, and an injection assembly configured to inject a fluid into the isolated section and pressurize the isolated section. The system also includes a measurement assembly including an interrogation unit coupled to at least one optical fiber having a length disposed at the deformable element that includes a plurality of measurement locations, and a processor configured to receive signals reflected by the plurality of measurement locations in real time during the downhole operation, calculate an amount of deformation of the deformable packer element, and estimate at least one property of the formation based on the deformation, the at least one property including a strain of the formation in response to injection of fluid.

Downhole fiber optic measurement of packers during fluid injection operations

A method and apparatus for estimating a rock strength profile of a formation is disclosed. A tool having a testing surface is conveyed into a wellbore in the formation. The testing surface is propelled to impact the formation at a plurality of depths in the wellbore. A measurement of hardness of the formation is obtained from a rebound of the testing surface from the formation at the plurality of depths. The rock strength profile of the formation is estimated using the obtained measurements of hardness at the plurality of depths. A parameter for drilling the wellbore can be affected using the estimated rock strength profile.

Downhole rebound hardness measurement while drilling or wireline logging

The disclosure is directed to methods and apparatuses for estimating a response relating to a formation by stressing a wall of a borehole during either wireline or while drilling deployment. The response may be estimated by stressing the wall of a borehole formed in the formation; and estimating a response of the borehole wall to the stress. The response may be estimated using a force module configured to induce the stress around borehole and a tool configured to estimate the response of the borehole wall to the stress.
