A transform function represented by at least n points that define n&#x2212;1 regions is determined based at least in part on a first set of values associated with a display frame and a maximum average contrast function. The n points can be determined in response to a change in an average contrast of the display frame compared to an average contrast of a previous display frame exceeding a predetermined threshold. The first set of values is converted to a corresponding second set of values based on the transform function. A backlight control signal is generated based on an average contrast of the second set of values, whereby the backlight control signal is configured to control an intensity of a backlight of a display. Further, a video signal is generated based on the second set of values, whereby the video signal configured to drive the display.

Adaptive backlight control and contrast enhancement

Various embodiments of methods and systems for intelligent multimedia-based thermal power management implemented in a portable computing device ('PCD') are disclosed. To reduce or increase power consumption in the PCD, embodiments adjust one or more visual multimedia parameters, the settings of which contribute to power consumption associated with an overall multimedia workload. The selection of visual multimedia parameters for setting adjustment is a function of the change in user experience versus the change in power consumption that will likely result from the setting adjustment. Exemplary visual multimedia parameters for which settings may be adjusted by certain embodiments include, but are not limited to, color depth, display brightness, GPU processing resolution, image dynamics algorithm selection, resolution scaling ratios and frames per second processing rates.

System and method for intelligent multimedia-based thermal power management in a portable computing device

In general, this disclosure relates to techniques for management of a multimedia connection between a wireless communication device (WCD) and one or more output devices. The connection may be a multimedia interface connection with content protection, e.g., High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI). In some cases, the multimedia interface connection with content protection may be inactive because the output device is no longer connected or the multimedia application is stopped or paused. The techniques include detecting a use mode of the multimedia interface connection with content protection between the WCD and one or more output devices. When the use mode of the multimedia interface connection with content protection is inactive, the WCD may reduce at least one of content processing or content protection processing. In this way, the techniques may reduce battery power consumption from multimedia processing by the WCD.

A video processing device comprises a display interface coupleable to a display device and a display controller configured to transmit a video signal via an output node of the display interface. The video signal comprises an active segment comprising video information and an inactive segment comprising synchronization information. The video processing device further comprises a display detector configured to determine whether the display device is coupled to the display interface based on a comparison of a first voltage at the output node during transmission of the inactive segment to a second voltage.

System and method for detecting display disconnection

A method comprises disabling a video digital-to-analog converter (DAC) that is configured to provide an output current representative of a video signal to an output node of an accessory connector in an enabled state. The accessory connector is coupleable to an accessory device. The method further comprises determining, while the video DAC is disabled, whether the accessory connector is coupled to the accessory device based on a voltage at the output node while the output node is connected to the first voltage reference via a resistor having a resistance.
