A method for producing hollow silica particles, comprising: (i) producing a first batch of core-shell particles in which each core-shell particle contains a sacrificial core coated with a silica shell, by adding a tetrahydrocarbyl orthosilicate and hydroxide base to a suspension of sacrificial core particles in a solvent-water mixture, wherein the resulting suspension has a pH of at least 10, and wherein the foregoing steps result in a coating of silica on the sacrificial core particles to produce the first batch of core-shell particles; (ii) separating the first batch of core-shell particles from the solvent-water mixture; (iii) producing a second batch of core-shell particles in the first-stage recovered solvent-water; (iv) separating the second batch of core-shell particles from the first-stage recovered solvent-water mixture; and (v) subjecting the dry first and second batches of core-shell particles to a core removal process to produce the hollow silica particles.

Methods for producing hollow silica particles

Compositions, methods, and articles of manufacture relating to a transparent/translucent insulating material formed by a hybrid silica gel composition made of porous silica particles joined with each other by silane crosslinking through a three dimensional silica network. In one embodiment, the hybrid silica gel includes small porous silica particles, and is made by a process that avoids energy intensive techniques.

A method for applying a coating to a surface includes the step of providing a reaction mixture comprising a silicon alkoxide and an alcohol. A reaction limiting amount of water is added. The silicon alkoxides and water are allowed to react to form silica precursor particles during an initial reaction period. A coating precursor composition is prepared by adding an acid soluble in the alcohol to the reaction mixture during a second reaction period after the initial reaction period. The precursor silica particles grow to form silica nanofeatures having a major dimension that is larger than a major dimension of the silica precursor particles. The coating precursor composition is applied to a surface, and the alcohol and water are allowed to evaporate and the silica nanofeatures to adhere to the surface and form a nanostructured layer on the surface. A coating precursor composition and a coated article are also disclosed.

Fused anti-soiling and anti-reflective coatings

A method for producing a composite polymeric article, an additive for a polymeric article, and a composite polymeric article are provided. The method generally includes providing a plurality of graphene nanoplatelets, providing a plurality of silica nanofibers, providing a polymeric material, and distributing the plurality of silica nanofibers and the plurality of graphene nanoplatelets within the polymeric material to achieve a composite article. The additive for a polymeric article includes a plurality of graphene nanoplatelets and a plurality of silica nanofibers. The composite polymeric article includes a plurality of graphene nanoplatelets, a plurality of silica nanofibers, and a polymeric matrix. The plurality of graphene nanoplatelets and the plurality of silica nanofibers are distributed within the polymeric matrix. The silica nanofibers have a mean cross sectional diameter of not more than 100 nm.

Nanocomposite additives based on graphene sheets and silica nanofibers

A thermally insulating composition comprising hollow spherical silica particles and a coating of a material having a thermal conductivity of less than 0.3 W/m&#xb7;K on surfaces of said silica particles. In particular embodiments, the low conductivity coating material may be a polymer, such as polystyrene or polyvinylpyrrolidone, or the low conductivity coating material may be a quaternary ammonium salt of the Formula (1), i.e., RRRRNA, with at least one of R, R, R, and Rbeing an alkyl group containing at least ten carbon atoms (and Ais a counter anion), or the low conductivity coating material may be phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester covalently bound to the hollow spherical silica particles. Also described herein is a method of thermally insulating a surface by applying a coating of the thermally insulating composition, described above, onto the surface.

Porous thermally insulating compositions containing hollow silica particles

A method for synthesizing silica nanofibers using sound waves is provided. The method includes providing a solution of polyvinyl pyrrolidone, adding sodium citrate and ammonium hydroxide to form a first mixture, adding a silica-based compound to the solution to form a second mixture, and sonicating the second mixture to synthesize a plurality of silica nanofibers having an average cross-sectional diameter of less than 70 nm and having a length on the order of at least several hundred microns. The method can be performed without heating or electrospinning, and instead includes less energy intensive strategies that can be scaled up to an industrial scale. The resulting nanofibers can achieve a decreased mean diameter over conventional fibers. The decreased diameter generally increases the tensile strength of the silica nanofibers, as defects and contaminations decrease with the decreasing diameter.
