A wireless communication system selectively delays serviced data communications to produce a desired level of voice communications capacity. The system first determines whether the wireless communication system has sufficient voice communications capacity. If it is determined that the wireless communication system has insufficient voice communications capacity, the system determines a data communications delay that is required to provide sufficient voice communications capacity. Based upon its determination, the system then selectively delays some or all of the data communications to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. In one operation, one data communication serviced by the wireless communication system is selectively delayed to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. In another operation, a plurality of data communications serviced by the wireless communication system are selectively delayed to create the sufficient voice communications capacity. When a plurality of data communications being serviced by the wireless communication system, some of the plurality of the data communications serviced by the wireless communication system are delayed by a first delay level and other of the data communications serviced are delayed by a second delay level.

Selectively delaying data communications in a wireless communication system to provide voice communications capacity

A mobile computer system capable of seamless roaming between wireless communication networks includes data processing resources for executing software, a plurality of wireless interfaces that supports simultaneous wireless connections with first and second wireless communication networks, and a network access arbitrator that routes data communicated between the software executed by the data processing resources and the first and second wireless communication networks. To permit seamless roaming, the network access arbitrator routes the data to the first wireless communication network via a first wireless interface and then seamlessly reroutes the data to a second wireless communication network via a second wireless interface. According to one embodiment, the network access arbitrator reroutes the data in response to the data bandwidths of the connections with the first and second wireless communication networks.

Method and system for seamless roaming between wireless communication networks with a mobile terminal

A unique byte is used to bookend commands and data for the purpose of allowing inband signalling and command communication between the IWF and the BSC portions of a mobile communication system having DS,maximum data rate transfer capability per data channel. The receipt of two consecutive ones of the unique bytes indicates that the next 2 bytes will be a command. The receipt of 3 consecutive ones of the unique bytes indicates the next byte will be data. This inband signalling and data transfer allows the IWF functionality to be remote from the main switch used by a given BSC. The CDMA system uses the inband signals to pass a plurality of data packets in parallel on DS,capacity channel links through the MTX in a half-duplex burst whenever a data buffer within the IWF or a connected high data transfer rate mobile station is filled to a given level. This burst process may operate on a time multiplex basis with low speed data transfers using the same DS,links to communicate with the IWF. To simplify the design of the burst process mechanism as concerns the bit robbing occurring in the least significant bit position of each DS,channel every 6th frame on DS,communication lines linking the BSC and the MTX, only the 7 most significant bit positions of a data byte are used in the data transmitted between a IWF entity and the SBS portion of a mobile network.

Methods and systems for tandem IWF interconnectivity

A wireless telephone system is adapted for serving portable telephone sets of itinerant users. The wireless telephone system is provided with a plurality of radio base stations being organized in at least two groups or paging areas. Each group has a boundary, a portion of each boundary being overlapped by at least one other boundary, and at least two of the at least two groups having at least two radio base stations, one of which is in common with the other group. From time to time in relation to each group, a beacon signal is radio transmitted from a radio base station exclusive to the group for soliciting a recordation response from a portable telephone set of an itinerant user within a beacon zone. When the presence of a respondent portable set is recorded as being within a service area of one of the groups, the portable set is instructed not to respond to subsequent occurrences of the same beacon signal for some hours to avoid cluttering the wireless spectrum with undue supervisory signalling. A call request wherein the itinerant user is a called party, results in the recorded portable set being paged via at least an idle one of the radio base stations of the group within which the portable set is recorded as being present, whereby the itinerant user may be called via the wireless telephone system without any requirement for the user to have prior knowledge of or to have taken any action in relation to the wireless telephone service.
