A reciprocating engine system includes a turbocharger system including a mechanically driven compressor, an electrically driven compressor, and a compressor bypass valve. A control system is programmed for generating control signals for: under nominal full load operating conditions, minimizing gas flow through the compressor bypass valve and compressing gas within the electrically driven compressor to maintain a speed set point or a full load power set point of the reciprocating engine system, under off nominal full load operating conditions wherein an efficiency of the mechanically driven compressor is reduced, compressing gas within the electrically driven compressor to compensate for the reduced efficiency of the mechanically driven compressor and to maintain the speed set point or the full load power set point of the reciprocating engine system, and under partial load operating conditions, partially diverting the gas flow through the compressor bypass valve in response to the reduced load.

Reciprocating engine system with electrically driven compressor and method for operating same

Systems and methods are provided for controlling exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In one example, an engine system includes a first EGR valve coupling an exhaust manifold to an engine exhaust system, a second EGR valve coupling the exhaust manifold to an engine intake system, and a control unit. The control unit selectively adjusts a position of the first EGR valve based on a target amount, and adjusts a position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and a position of the first EGR valve. Responsive to a first degradation condition of the first EGR valve, the control unit adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount and based on a pressure of the first exhaust manifold, and responsive to a second degradation condition of the first EGR valve, adjusts the position of the second EGR valve based on the target amount.

Method and systems for exhaust gas control

A system includes an air source, an internal combustion engine, a first turbocharger, a second turbocharger, and a third turbocharger. The first turbocharger includes a first turbine and a first compressor, the second turbocharger includes a second turbine and a second compressor, and the third turbocharger includes a third turbine and a third compressor. The third compressor is fluidly coupled to the air source and is fluidly coupled to one of the first compressor and the second compressor. The first compressor is fluidly coupled upstream of the second compressor, and the second compressor is fluidly coupled upstream of the third turbine. The third turbine is fluidly coupled upstream of the internal combustion engine.

The system includes a sensor disposed on or proximate to the first fuel injector and configured to generate an electrical signal indicative of at least one of a start of the injection and an end of the injection of the first fuel. The system further includes a controller configured to adjust at least one of a mass and the start of injection of the first fuel to be injected by the first fuel injector based on the electrical signal. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems and methods are provided. In one embodiment, a method for controlling an engine includes providing a first EGR gas flow to an intake manifold of the engine by closing a first EGR valve or a second EGR valve and at least partially opening the other of the first EGR valve and the second EGR valve, wherein the first and second EGR valves are respectively positioned in first and second EGR passages respectively coupled between first and second donor cylinder groups and an intake manifold, and providing a second EGR gas flow that is higher than the first EGR gas flow to the intake manifold by fully opening the first EGR valve or the second EGR valve and at least partially opening the other of the first EGR valve and the second EGR valve.

Systems and methods for controlling exhaust gas recirculation

An exemplary turbocharger system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The turbocharger system includes a first turbine and a second turbine. The first turbine is in fluid communication with the internal combustion engine. The first turbine receives a first portion exhaust gas discharged from the internal combustion engine and provides a first turbine exhaust gas. The second turbine is in fluid communication with the first turbine via an inter-stage channel. The inter-stage channel transports the first turbine exhaust gas from the first turbine to the second turbine. The inter-stage channel is in thermal connection with an exhaust gas recirculation channel defined between an inlet and an outlet of the internal combustion engine. The first turbine exhaust gas flowing through the inter-stage channel is capable of being heated by a second portion exhaust gas discharged from the internal combustion engine and flowing through the exhaust gas recirculation channel.

A system for recovering heat from recirculating exhaust gases is provided. The system includes a first exhaust manifold in fluid communication with multiple combustion chambers of an engine. The system also includes a turbocharger having a turbine stage and a compressor stage, wherein the turbine stage comprises an inlet port in fluid communication with the first exhaust manifold and the compressor stage includes an inlet port for air intake and an outlet port for compressed air. Exhaust gas recirculation heat recovery system and method

A diesel engine system includes a cylinder, an exhaust manifold, an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) manifold, and a valve. The exhaust manifold is fluidly coupled with the cylinder and directs exhaust generated in the cylinder to an exhaust outlet that delivers the exhaust to an external atmosphere. The EGR manifold is fluidly coupled with the cylinder and recirculates the exhaust generated in the cylinder back to the cylinder as at least part of intake air that is received by the cylinder. The valve is disposed between the cylinder and the exhaust manifold and between the cylinder and the EGR manifold. The valve has a donating mode and a non-donating mode. The valve fluidly couples the cylinder with the EGR manifold when the valve is in the donating mode and fluidly couples the cylinder with the exhaust manifold when the valve is in the non-donating mode.
