A method of coordinating a plurality of radio access networks (RANs) includes aggregating, with a gateway, communications interfaces between a plurality of RANs and a packet core network through the gateway. A plurality of radio nodes (RNs) in each of the RANs is communicatively coupled to the gateway and to user equipment (UE) devices associated with the RNs in each of the RANs. The gateway also controls and coordinates mobility of the UE devices within and among the RANs. In addition, the gateway acts as a virtual enhanced NodeB (eNB) to the packet core network, thereby hiding the aggregated communications interfaces from the packet core network.

Gateway coordinating multiple small cell radio access networks

A method for assigning a percentage of a CSAT time cycle to each radio node (RN) in a plurality of RNs that belong to a small cell radio access network (RAN) having a central controller includes: (i) for each time cycle period during which the RNs share a channel with one or more nodes that employ a different radio access technology (RAT), assigning a default occupancy percentage of the time cycles to each of the RNs; (ii) determining if the default occupancy percentage is able to be increased without violating one or more co-existence principles pre-established for the RAT employed by the RNs in the RAN and the different RAT; (iii) increasing the occupancy percentage of the first RN if it is determined that the default occupancy percentage is able to be increased without violating the co-existence principles; and (iv) sequentially repeating (ii)-(iii) for each remaining RN in the RAN.

Systems and methods are disclosed that provide a closed loop power control system including adaptively adjusting the desired target SINR over time so as to ultimately achieve a feasible SINR. In one implementation, a method is provided of optimizing uplink closed loop power control in a RAN in which one or more base stations each service a plurality of mobile stations, including: determining a power level for each mobile station for its respective uplink transmissions, including measuring a current achieved SINR for each mobile station; and for each mobile station, adjusting the power level to be sufficiently high to meet desired transmission characteristics but not so high as to cause unnecessary interference with transmissions from other mobile stations, by adjusting a desired target SINR based on factors selected from the following: current and prior achieved SINRs, current and prior interference measurements, and current and prior transmission power control commands.

System and method for closed loop uplink power control

Enhanced features for a gateway coordinating multiple small cell radio access networks

A method is shown for allocating a plurality of channels to a plurality of radio nodes (RNs) in a radio access network (RAN). In accordance with the method, an initial RN is selected from among the plurality of RNs. A first of the plurality of channels is assigned to the initial RN. The first channel is selected such that external interference experienced by the initial RN from sources other than the RAN on the first channel is minimized. A second RN is selected from among the plurality of RNs. A second of the plurality of channels is assigned to the second RN. The second channel is selected such that a metric reflective of an information carrying capacity of the RNs that have already been assigned one of the plurality of channels is maximized. The assigned channels are allocated to the respective RNs to which they have been assigned.

Methods for centralized channel selection across different cells in a radio access network

A user equipment, apparatus, and method are provided for wireless communication using an IG-OFDM structure. An apparatus is configured to transmit a known reference signal. The apparatus is configured to receive, in response to the reference signal and from at least one user equipment (UE), capability information that includes at least one of the sub-band bandwidth or number of independently decodable sub-bands that can be dynamically turned on or off by the at least one UE. The apparatus is configured to define an interleaved guard OFDM (IG-OFDM) structure according to the received capability information, the IG-OFDM structure including guard tones distributed within an OFDM symbol where there is no signal transmission on these guard tones. The apparatus is configured to communicate with the at least one UE using a transmitted waveform that is shaped according to the IG-OFDM structure.

Methods and apparatus using interleaved guard OFDM in wireless communication systems

A method for a wireless device capable of receiving and transmitting a signal includes receiving a reference signal from a second wireless device through a communication channel, estimating the communication channel, using the reference signal, selecting a pair of an analog digital converter (ADC) quantizer and an input distribution, based on the estimated communication channel, and sending information on the selected input distribution and the ADC quantizer to the second wireless device. A wireless device capable of wirelessly receiving and transmitting a signal includes a transceiver configured to receive a reference signal from a second wireless device through a communication channel, and a processor configured to estimate the communication channel, using the reference signal, selecting a pair of an ADC quantizer and an input distribution, based on the estimated communication channel, and sending information on the selected input distribution and the ADC quantizer to the second wireless device.

Method and apparatus for facilitating high data rate transmission in the wireless communication

Beam-steered millimeter wave signals transmitted in each of n sector slices include a sequence of primary synchronization (PSCH) symbols within predetermined symbol positions in at least one slot of a subframe. The symbols in consecutive symbol positions are each transmitted on a different one of the n slices, with the first symbol repeated on the same slice at the end. The sequence order rotates cyclically in each subframe so that two PSCH symbols are transmitted on one slice in a single subframe every nth subframe. Secondary synchronization (SSCH) and Broadcast Channel (BCH) symbols are transmitted in a predetermined pattern following the sequence of PSCH symbols. By transmitting consecutive PSCH symbols on different slices and repeating the first symbol, the mobile station can detect the best slice and beam by switching receive beams every subframe instead of every slot, relaxing time constraints on AGC adjustment while avoiding the start-at-the-edge problem.

Methods and apparatus to transmit and receive synchronization signals in a mobile communication system

A method and an apparatus for channel estimation. The method includes identifying a set of preferred BS receive beams for each of a plurality of BS antenna SAs based on periodic pilot transmissions from a UE transmitted using predefined UE transmit beams. The method also includes transmitting a request for the UE to transmit pilot signals for the set of preferred BS receive beams. The method further includes receiving the pilot signals using the set of preferred BS receive beams. The method also includes performing channel estimation and determining the data transmission parameters based on the received pilot signals, the data transmission parameters including at least one receive beam at each UE antenna SA to be used for data reception. Additionally, the method includes transmitting, to the UE, information for identifying the at least one receive beam at each UE antenna SA to be used for data reception.
