Provided are a method, system, and article of manufacture for searching documents for ranges of numeric values. Document identifiers for documents are accessed, wherein the documents include at least one value that is a member of a set of values. A number of posting lists are generated. Each posting list is associated with a range of consecutive values within the set of values and includes document identifiers for documents including at least one value within the range of consecutive values associated with the posting list, and wherein each document identifier is associated with one value in the set of values included in the document identified by the document identifier. The generated posting lists are stored, wherein the posting lists are used to process a query on a range of values within the set of values.

Searching documents for ranges of numeric values

Provided are a system and article of manufacture for searching documents for ranges of numeric values. A number of posting lists is generated, wherein each posting list is associated with a range of consecutive values within the set of values and includes document identifiers for documents including at least one value within the range of consecutive values associated with the posting list, and wherein each document identifier is associated with one value in the set of values included in the document identified by the document identifier. The generated posting lists are stored. A query on a query range of values within the set of values is received and a determination is made of a minimum number of posting lists associated with consecutive values that together include the query range of values. The determined posting lists are merged.

Disclosed is a system architecture, components and a searching technique for an Unstructured Information Management System (UIMS). The UIMS may be provided as middleware for the effective management and interchange of unstructured information over a wide array of information sources. The architecture generally includes a search engine, data storage, analysis engines containing pipelined document annotators and various adapters. The searching technique makes use of a two-level searching technique. A search query includes a search operator containing of a plurality of search sub-expressions each having an associated weight value. The search engine returns a document or documents having a weight value sum that exceeds a threshold weight value sum. The search operator is implemented as a Boolean predicate that functions as a Weighted AND (WAND).

An extended inverted index structure by generating one or more lexical affinities (LA), wherein each of the one or more lexical affinities comprises two or more search items found in proximity in one or more documents in a pool of documents, and generating a posting list for each of the one or more lexical affinities, wherein each posting list is associated with a specific lexical affinity and contains document identifying information for each of the one or more documents in the pool that contains the specific lexical affinity and a location within the document where the specific lexical affinity occurs.

Enhancing query performance of search engines using lexical affinities

Disclosed is a technique for indexing data. For each token in a set of documents, a sort key is generated that includes a document identifier that indicates whether a section of a document associated with the sort key is an anchor text section or a context section, wherein the anchor text section and the context text section have a same document identifier; it is determined whether a data field associated with the token is a fixed width; when the data field is a fixed width, the token is designated as one for which fixed width sort is to be performed; and, when the data field is a variable length, the token is designated as one for which a variable width sort is to be performed. The fixed width sort and the variable width sort are performed. For each document, the sort keys are used to bring together the anchor text section and the context section of that document.

Disclosed is a technique for indexing data. A token is received. It is determined whether a data field associated with the token is a fixed width. When the data field is a fixed width, the token is designated as one for which fixed width sort is to be performed. When the data field is a variable length, the token is designated as one for which a variable width sort is to be performed.

In a data mining system, data is gathered into a data store using, e.g., a Web crawler. The data is classified into entities and stored into underlying vertical and horizontal tables respectively representing miner outputs and entities that can be the subjects of indexing. Data miners use rules to process the entities and append respective keys to the entities representing characteristics of the entities as derived from rules embodied in the miners, with the keys being associated with the entities in the tables. With these keys, characteristics of entities as defined by disparate expert authors of the data miners are identified for use in responding to complex data requests from customers.

A system for synchronizing data between two devices. A first device displays a data stream as a sequence of one or more two-dimensional frames on a video screen attached thereto, wherein each of the two-dimensional frames is comprised of at least one two-dimensional shape of varying color that represents at least one data element within the data stream. A second device having an image sensing device coupled thereto captures images from the displayed sequence of two-dimensional frames and for decodes the data elements from the captured images.

A method, system, and article of manufacture for generating a list of candidate objects for a requested object. An identifier for the requested object is accepted, wherein the identifier comprises a target string. A list of candidate objects is generated when the requested object cannot be found by performing a hierarchical string match for the target string against a set of source strings using multi-path dynamic programming, wherein the set of source strings represent a set of objects from which the list of candidate objects is generated.
