A system and method for determining the location of nodes within a network. Beamforming coefficients associated with signals transmitted from a first node to a second node are determined and, based on the beamforming coefficients, direction is determined between the first and second nodes. Distance is determined as a function of direction and the location of the second node is determined as a function of distance and direction.

System and method for locating nodes within a wireless network

One or more devices of a network having asymmetric delay are configured to participate in time synchronization protocol sessions in which a client device synchronizes its local clock to a master device. In one example, a system includes an optical line terminal configured to receive a time synchronization protocol packet from a grandmaster clock and an optical network unit (ONU) configured to calculate a residence time of the time synchronization protocol packet, encode the residence time into the packet, and to forward the packet to a client device. Moreover, the system may participate in a plurality of time synchronization protocol sessions with a plurality of client devices, such that the client devices become synchronized in frequency and phase.

Transparent clock for precision timing distribution

This disclosure is directed to techniques for facilitating clock recovery in optical networks. An optical network terminal (ONT) that terminates a fiber link of an optical network includes a clock mode selection module that automatically selects a clock recovery mode based on a type of optical network to which the ONT connects and a type of service provided to one or more subscriber devices coupled to the ONT. By automatically selecting the clock recovery module, an administrator or other user need not provision this aspect of the optical network, thereby reducing administrative tasks and facilitating the provisioning of the optical network. In addition, the techniques enable selection of the most optimal clock recovery mode based on the current state of the optical network.

A method of creating a signal encoded with a message for transmission from a line unit to a switch unit in a network element of a communication network includes arranging in the message a plurality of contiguous bytes of traffic and arranging in the message a plurality of contiguous nibbles of signaling wherein there is one nibble of signaling for each byte of traffic.

Backplane bus

A scalable multi-service node system uses a stackplane architecture which allows the transport capacity to be flexibly expanded while providing first traffic mode and second traffic mode link channels. The primary channel bank is provided, and one or more secondary channel banks are connected to the primary channel bank through the stackplane first traffic mode and second traffic mode links. The system is expandable by adding secondary channel banks to the system through the stackplane links.

Stackplane architecture

A scalable digital loop carrier system uses a stackplane architecture which allows the transport capacity of the scalable digital loop carrier system to be flexibly expanded while providing time division multiplex (TDM) and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) data link channels. The primary channel bank is provided in the scalable digital loop carrier system, and one or more secondary channel banks are connected to the primary channel bank through the stackplane ATM and TDM data links. The scalable digital loop carrier system is expandable by adding secondary channel banks to the system through the stackplane TDM and ATM data links.

Traffic is transported within a system in the form of TDM packets. These packets are generated at source line units and transported from the line units to a switch. The switch routes the packets to appropriate target line units based on information contained within the packet. At the switch, packets from the source line units may be merged. A gather function relies on each of the line units sourcing packets to exclusively drive lines at software-assigned timeslots within the packet. The switch performs a simple OR function of each byte in merging the packet payloads.

Traffic merging system

A network element can be configured for connection to any portion of a communication network: access, transport and core. Moreover, a single network element can be configured to couple subscriber equipment directly to the core portion of the network, thereby permitting the subscriber to bypass the transport portion of the network. Specifically, such a network element can be configured to include a line unit that supports subscriber equipment (also called a &ldquo;subscriber line unit&rdquo;), and also to include a line unit to support a link to the core of the communication network (also called a &ldquo;core line unit&rdquo;). The subscriber line unit and core line unit are both installed in a single chassis, and each unit can be installed in any of a number of slots in the chassis. Moreover, when configured with appropriate line units, such a network element may support traditional circuit-switched telephony services while simultaneously delivering packet-based voice or data services. The network element provides multi-class service over the entire range of the network because it employs a common switch fabric for handling both synchronous and asynchronous traffic over a common bus.

Concurrent switching of synchronous and asynchronous traffic

STS-n with enhanced granularity is achieved by using an ATM cell framer which includes a plurality of cell delineators and cell assemblers for conversions between broadband STS-n which occupies at least a portion of a bandwidth of a synchronous payload envelope (SPE), such as a synchronous optical network (SONET) bandwidth, and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells. The SONET bandwidth is flexibly and efficiently allocated for transporting the broadband STS-n which carries ATM data, wherein n can be varied in small increments to allow the SONET bandwidth to be shared with narrowband STS if the broadband STS-n does not occupy the entire SONET bandwidth.

A variable rate subscriber bus is adaptable to carry communications traffic in the forms of DS0, T1 or DS1 formats between a channel bank and a channel card at any one of a plurality of predetermined data rates. The data rate for the variable rate subscriber bus is selected according to the type and capacity of the channel card. The variable rate subscriber bus is capable of supporting high data rate traffic for high density channel cards while maintaining compatibility with conventional low density channel cards.

A method of scheduling a plurality of time multiplexed cells and a plurality of asynchronous cells in a temporal frame, which consists of first and second subframes, comprises the steps of assigning the time multiplexed cells or clusters of time multiplexed cells interspersed by a first plurality of asynchronous cells to the first frame and assigning a second plurality of asynchronous cells to the second subframe.
