A wastegate assembly with a valve head moved linearly toward and away from a wastegate port via a valve stem. When the valve is in an open position the valve seat face of the valve head is spaced apart from the valve seat. When the valve is in a closed position the valve seat face of the valve head is secured against the valve seat. The wastegate assembly includes a sidewall surrounding the wastegate port elongated in the direction of valve movement. The contoured side wall widens going away from the valve seat. The minimum flow area through the wastegate port is controlled such that the flow is choked via the side wall rather than the valve curtain area. The contoured side wall can be recessed into the housing or extend from the housing.

A seal () for a shaft () of a turbocharger () to prevent liquid from leaking out of a bearing housing (). The seal () includes a cylindrical body extending between opposite end faces () and has a cylindrical bore extending between the opposite end faces () for receiving the shaft () therethrough. The cylindrical bore defines an inner surface () having at least one striation () extending in a helical direction about the shaft (). Rotation of the shaft () relative to the seal () causes a pumping effect on liquid present between the shaft () and the inner surface () of the seal (), thereby causing the liquid to flow back towards the bearing housing ().

An exhaust gas turbocharger with a wastegate port configured to permit some exhaust gas flow to exit a turbine volute upstream of the turbine wheel and enter a bypass channel thereby bypassing the turbine wheel, a valve with a valve head dimensioned to seat on a valve seat and to move between a seated position and an open position, the bypass channel having a sidewall contoured to surround the valve head as the valve head moves between the seated position and the open position, he bypass channel sidewall shaped so that a throat area (A) area between the bypass channel sidewall and valve head gradually increases as the valve head moves between the seated and the open position, such the bypass flow is controlled by the throat area (A) and not the area between the valve head and the valve seat.

A number of variations may include a turbocharger bearing housing comprising a bearing bore, a rolling element bearing assembly including an inner race and an outer race having a plurality of ball bearings disposed therebetween, wherein the rolling element bearing assembly is disposed within the bearing bore, a shaft for rotating the rolling element bearing assembly, located and supported within the inner race, a tubular bearing spacer, having at least one radial opening, positioned within the bearing bore, a mounting bore, a generally tubular insert mounted in the mounting bore and extending into the at least one radial opening of the tubular bearing spacer, and a rotational speed sensor mounted to the tubular insert via threaded fitting or friction fit.

A bearing housing () for a turbocharger () includes a split () defining a first bearing housing segment () and a second bearing housing segment (). At least one channel () for transporting fluid within the bearing housing () crosses the split () such that the channel () extends within the first bearing housing segment () and the second bearing housing segment (). A dowel () having a hollow interior is inserted in the channel () to align the first and second bearing housing segments () and allows fluid to flow through the channel ().

A variable flow hydraulic tensioner () for a chain or belt can include a fixed member () having a first port (), and a movable member () in engaged with the fixed member (). The movable member () can include a second port () initially aligned with respect to the first port () to allow fluid flow therethrough. A first spring () can bias the movable member () with respect to the fixed member () to align the first and second ports () with respect to one another to allow fluid flow therethrough. A second spring () can have less spring force than the first spring () to bias the movable member () in an opposite direction with respect to the fixed member (), such that as the chain or belt wears, a differential force between the first and second springs () diminishes until the movable member () moves relative to the fixed member () sufficiently to offset the first and second ports () with respect to one another to prevent fluid flow therethrough.

A turbocharger bearing housing, including a bearing bore having two journal bearings located in the bearing bore and a tubular bearing spacer having first and second axial ends for spacing apart said journal bearings. The tubular bearing spacer having at least one radial opening and a mounting bore for receipt of a turbocharger shaft. The mounting bore further being capable of receiving a generally tubular insert mounted therein and extending into the at least one radial opening of the bearing spacer. The tubular insert further including an indexing surface to assist in setting the depth of insertion for a rotational speed sensor mounted therein via threaded fitting or friction fit and creating a set air gap between an end of the speed sensor and the rotating shaft.

An engine chain or belt tensioning system includes a tensioner pivot arm with a ratcheting means that includes backlash in an engine timing system. The tensioner system includes a tensioner pivot arm having a fixed pin, radially projecting ratchet teeth, a tensioner pivot arm biasing device, and a ratchet mechanism that engages the radially projecting ratchet teeth. The ratchet mechanism is oriented such that the tensioner pivot arm freely rotates in one direction, but backdrive is limited in the opposite direction.

A sprocket (S) for a chain driven power transmission system used on an internal combustion engine. Severe ITVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) characteristics associated with a chain engaging the sprocket is damped by two annular rings (R, R) that are loosely positioned on either side of the circumferential row of teeth. The inner diameters (ID, ID) of each of the annular rings (R, R) form cavities between the annular rings and the sprocket grooves. Pressurized viscous fluid is supplied to each cavity via channels in the hub of the sprocket to cushion the impact of each roller of the chain as it engages each row of teeth during engine operation. The pressure of the viscous fluid creates a resistive force to minimize the severe impact noise experienced by non-damped sprockets.
