Foldable apparatus comprise a foldable substrate foldable about an axis and a substrate thickness defined between a first major surface and a second major surface. The foldable substrate comprises a central portion positioned between a first portion and a second portion. The first portion comprising a substrate thickness. The central portion comprises a central thickness that is less than the substrate thickness. In some embodiments, a width of central portion is about 45 millimeters or less. Methods of making a foldable apparatus comprise forming a recess in a first major surface of the foldable substrate. In some embodiments, methods comprise chemically strengthening the foldable substrate.

Fracture resistant stress profiles in glasses

A transparent article is described herein that includes: a glass-ceramic substrate comprising first and second primary surfaces opposing one another and a crystallinity of at least 40% by weight; and an optical film structure disposed on the first primary surface. The optical film structure comprises a plurality of alternating high refractive index (RI) and low RI layers and a scratch-resistant layer. The article also exhibits an average photopic transmittance of greater than 80% and a maximum hardness of greater than 10 GPa, as measured by a Berkovich Hardness Test over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm. The glass-ceramic substrate comprises an elastic modulus of greater than 85 GPa and a fracture toughness of greater than 0.8 MPa·√m. Further, the optical film structure exhibits a residual compressive stress of ≥700 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≥140 GPa.

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition having an average core coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and a clad layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition having an average clad coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) that is less than the CTEsuch that the clad layer is in compression and the core layer is in tension. A compressive stress of the clad layer increases with increasing distance from the outer surface of the clad layer, transitions to a minimum tensile stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the clad layer, and a magnitude of the tensile stress increases continuously to a maximum tensile stress in the core layer. Other stress profiles, and methods of preparing laminated glass articles are also disclosed.

Glass laminates having determined stress profiles and methods of making the same

Methods for compensating for warp typically exhibited by glass-based articles having non-uniform thicknesses as a result of ion exchange strengthening are provided. The methods include producing a molding surface of a mold based on a measurement of warp obtained by a specified ion exchange strengthening of a glass-based substrate of non-uniform thickness, such that the molding surface offsets the warp. Glass-based substrates resulting from the mold can then be exposed to the specified ion exchange strengthening and form glass-based articles that are substantially free of warp.

A laminated glass article comprises a core layer comprising a core glass composition, and a cladding layer directly adjacent to the core layer and comprising a clad glass composition. A stress of the cladding layer increases with increasing distance from an outer surface of the cladding layer from a compressive stress to a tensile stress, transitions to a compressive stress as a step-change at an interface region between the core layer and the cladding layer, and increases with increasing distance from the interface region to a center of the core layer from the compressive stress to a tensile stress.

Making a glass-based article having a coating and a target shape which comprises a planar central portion and a perimeter portion which borders at least part of the planar central portion and extends out of the plane of the planar central portion, the perimeter portion having a perimeter edge and a target edge-to-opposite edge dimension. The method includes forming a glass-based part to provide an initial formed part having an initial three-dimensional shape that is different from the target shape for at least the target edge-to-opposite edge dimension. Applying a coating to the initial formed part to form the glass-based article having a coating, the coating imparting a stress to the initial molded part that causes a calculated, warp-induced change to the initial shape.

A glass substrate comprises: a first position, wherein a tensile stress of the glass substrate is insufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate; and a second position, wherein the glass substrate is bent relative to the first position, and wherein the tensile stress of the glass substrate is sufficient to cause fragmentation of the glass substrate into small pieces upon fracture of the glass substrate. The glass substrate can include a first surface and a second surface. In the first position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. In the second position, the first surface and the second surface of the glass substrate can be planar. The small pieces can be generally cubic. In the second position, the glass substrate can be bent uniaxially along a bend axis of the glass substrate.
