A system according to the principles of the present disclosure includes a switching period module and at least one of a valve lift control module and a start-stop control module. The switching period module determines a switching period that elapses as a valve lift actuator of an engine switches between a first valve lift position and a second valve lift position that is different than the first lift position. The switching period begins when a measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the first lift position and the switching period ends when the measured position of the valve lift actuator corresponds to the second lift position. The valve lift control module controls the valve lift actuator based on the switching period. The start-stop control module determines whether to automatically stop the engine based on the switching period.

A method for determining a position of a rotating shaft and, more particularly, for determining a sync position of an engine crankshaft or engine camshaft. The method includes sequentially measuring consecutive time periods generated in response to rotation of the shaft, and comparing each measured time period to a value calculated from a predetermined function based on more than one measured time period to determine the sync position. Preferably, the comparing step includes comparing a penultimate measured time period to a product of a sync factor and the sum of an ultimate measured time period, the penultimate measured time period, and an antepenultimate measured time period. After determining the sync position, the method includes sequentially measuring a predetermined number of consecutive time periods generated in response to further or continued rotation of the shaft, and comparing a penultimate measured time period to a value calculated from the predetermined function to verify the sync position.

An improved fuel compensation method for a variable cam phase engine which predicts the phase of the cam at the midpoint of valve overlap and uses the predicted cam phase to compensate a base fuel pulse for the corresponding amount of diluent. If the cam phase is in transition to a desired value, the cam phase for purposes of compensation may be predicted based on the desired cam phase, current cam phase and its rate of change; otherwise, the cam phase is predicted based on the current cam phase. In a first interval of cam phase transition characterized by nonlinear change in cam phase, the cam phase is predicted by applying a nonlinear offset to the measured cam phase. In a second interval of cam phase transition characterized by substantially linear variation of cam phase, the cam phase is predicted by linear extrapolation of the measured cam phase, and limited to range bounded by the measured cam phase and the desired cam phase.
