A pre-treatment coating composition includes evaporable liquid vehicle and a pre-treatment coating matrix, including from 30 wt % to 70 wt % multivalent organic salt, from 5 wt % to 30 wt % dispersed polyurethane binder having a weight average molecular weight from 30,000 Mw to 100,000 Mw, from 0.5 wt % to 8 wt % of a high molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol binder, and from 10 wt % to 30 wt % of a low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol binder. The low molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol binder and the high molecular weight polyvinyl alcohol binder are present in the pre-treatment coating matrix at a 3:1 to 15:1 weight ratio, and weight percentages are based on dry weight of the pre-treatment coating matrix.

Pre-treatments for packaging print media

In one example of the disclosure, a print agent is applied upon a length of web substrate. A dryer is utilized to dry the web substrate length. Moisture is applied to the web substrate length. The moisturized web substrate length is wound upon a spool to form a top liner length, with no dryer to be utilized to dry the web substrate length between the moisture application and the winding.

Top liner formation

The present disclosure provides pre-treatment compositions and related methods. As such, a pre-treatment coating composition can include an evaporable liquid vehicle and a pre-treatment coating matrix. The pre-treatment coating matrix can include from 5 wt % to 40 wt % multivalent metal salt, and from 5 wt % to 20 wt % polyurethane. The composition can further include from 10 wt % to 50 wt % high Tg latex having a Tg greater than 80&#xb0; C., from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt % water soluble binder, and from 3 wt % to 20 wt % wax having a melting point greater than 120&#xb0; C. The weight percentages of the pre-treatment coating matrix exclude the evaporable liquid vehicle content, and the weight ratio of the high Tg latex to polyurethane is from 1:1 to 5:1.

Pre-treatment coating compositions

The present disclosure provides pre-treatment compositions and related methods. As such, a pre-treatment coating composition can include an evaporable liquid vehicle and a pre-treatment coating matrix. The pre-treatment coating matrix can include from 5 wt % to 40 wt % multivalent metal salt, and from 5 wt % to 20 wt % coalescent latex binder comprising styrene-butadiene rubber, polyurethane, or mixture thereof. The composition can further include from 30 wt % to 80 wt % high Tg latex having a Tg greater than 80&#xb0; C., from 0.5 wt % to 20 wt % water soluble binder, and from 3 wt % to 20 wt % wax having a melting point greater than 120&#xb0; C. The weight percentages of the pre-treatment coating matrix exclude the evaporable liquid vehicle content.

The present disclosure provides a print medium, a printed article, and a method of printing. The print medium can include a thin paper substrate having weight ranging from 40 GSM to 150 GSM, and a pre-treatment coating applied to the thin paper substrate at a weight ranging from 0.3 GSM to 15 GSM. The pre-treatment coating can include from 10 wt % to 80 wt % of a fixer, from 3 wt % to 50 wt % of a latex polymer, and from 5 wt % to 50 wt % of a water holding agent.

Print medium

A printable recording media containing a substrate; a pre-coat layer including more than about 60 wt % of one or more inorganic pigments by total dry weight of the pre-coat layer; a topcoating layer including more than about 60 wt % of one or more inorganic pigments; up to 25 wt % of binders and up to about 5 wt % of a combination of natural and synthetic rheology modifiers, by total weight of the top-coating layer, wherein the ratio of the amount of natural rheology modifiers to the amount of synthetic rheology modifiers is from about 90:10 to about 50:50. Also disclosed herein is a method for making such printable recording media.

Printable recording media

A post-printing treatment for printed media includes a wax suspended in water. Particles of the wax to lie upon at least an inkjet ink image on the printed media to facilitate abrasion resistance of the image.

Post-printing treatment

The present disclosure provides swellable pre-treatment compositions, printable media, and related methods. As such, a swellable pre-treatment coating for a print medium can include an evaporable solvent, a matrix, and a wax. The matrix can include from 10 wt % to 20 wt % of a fixer, from 25 wt % to 35 wt % of aluminum chlorohydrate, from 0.5 wt % to 10 wt % of a first binder, from 20 wt % to 30 wt % of a second cross-linkable binder, and from 1 wt % to 5 wt % of a cross-linker. The wax can be present at from 10 wt % to 20 wt %, The weight percentages of the matrix and the wax are based on a total amount present in the swellable pre-treatment coating after removal of the evaporable solvent.

Swellable pre-treatment coating

The present disclosure provides pre-treatment coatings, media substrates, and related methods. As such, a pre-treatment coating can include an evaporable solvent, a matrix, and a wax. The matrix can include a binder and a fixer, and the wax can include wax particles dispersed within the matrix. At least a portion of the wax particles can have a particle size that is greater than a thickness of the matrix when the pre-treatment coating is applied to a media substrate at a basis weight from 0.5 gsm to 20 gsm and the evaporable solvent removed.

Pre-treatment coating

A coated medium for inkjet printing is disclosed. The coated medium includes a coating layer formed on at least one side of a supporting substrate. The coating layer includes precipitated calcium carbonate with an average particle size of less than about 1 micron, silica with a surface area of greater than 100 m/g, a third inorganic pigment with an average particle size greater than that of precipitated calcium carbonate and selected from the group consisting of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and clays, and at least one binder, wherein silica is present in an amount of at least 15 parts based on 100 parts of inorganic pigments in total.

Coated medium for inkjet printing and method of fabricating the same

A print medium includes a first layer on at least one of a first side and a second side of a substrate and a second layer. The first layer consists essentially of at least 80% by dry weight of one or more particulate inorganic pigments (PIPs). A combination of a particle size and a coat weight of the first layer on the substrate yields an effective pore size of the first layer in a range of about 0.008 to about 0.5 microns. For two or more PIPs in the first layer, the average particle size of one of the PIPs differs by no more than about 50% from the average particle size of another of the PIPs. The second layer is on top of the first layer and includes a particulate inorganic pigment (PIP) having an average particle size of about 0.1 to about 2 microns.

The present disclosure provides pre-treatment compositions and related methods. As such, a pre-treatment coating for a print medium can include a an evaporable solvent, a matrix, and a wax. The matrix can include from 5 wt % to 20 wt % of a fixer, from 5 wt % to 20 wt % of a low Tg latex, and from 30 wt % to 80 wt % of a high Tg latex. The wax can include from 5 wt % to 30 wt % of a wax. The weight percentages of the matrix and the wax are based on a total amount present in the pre-treatment coating after removal of solvent.

A media for digital high speed inkjet web press printing has a CD residual tensile energy absorption index greater than 300 J/Kg. The media includes a paper base having a MD/CD tensile stiffness index ratio of less than 2.0 and a tensile energy absorption index of greater than 500 J/Kg. The paper base includes a mixture of fibers having a softwood fiber to hardwood fiber ratio within a range of 3 to 7 to 7 to 1, an internal starch having a cationic starch to fiber ratio greater than 1.0%, and a filler within a range of about 1.0% to about 12.0% of paper base weight. The media further includes an image receiving coating on a side of the paper base.

Media used in digital high speed inkjet web press printing

A printing method for producing durable images onto a printable recording medium is disclosed herein. The printing method encompasses providing a printable recording media; applying an ink composition containing a liquid vehicle and a colorant; wherein the print speed of the printing method is 50 fpm or higher. The printable recording media encompasses a base substrate, a first ink-receiving layer containing more than about 80 wt % of one or more particulate inorganic pigments and a second ink-receiving layer, on top of the first ink-receiving layer, including particulate inorganic pigments having an average particle size of about 0.1 to about 2 &#x3bc;m.

Printing method

A coated medium for inkjet printing, which includes a supporting substrate and a coating layer formed on at least one side thereof. The coating layer includes at least one binder and at least two different inorganic pigments: modified calcium carbonate (MCC) and either precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) or clay.
