A method of analysing crystals is described. The method comprises focusing a laser into a crystal to induce the creation, modification, dissociation, or diffusion of one or more defects within a focal region of the laser. A signal dependent on the creation, modification, dissociation or diffusion of the one or more defects within the focal region of the laser is measured during or after the aforementioned process and used to determine one or more characteristics of the crystal being analysed. In one configuration, one or more fluorescent defects are created, modified, or dissociated and the fluorescent signal is analysed to determine the type of crystal being analysed.

Laser method and apparatus for analysing crystals

A method of fabricating one or more colour centres in a crystal is described. The method comprises focusing a laser into a crystal to induce the creation, modification, or diffusion of defects within a focal region of the laser. Fluorescence detection is used to determine when one or more colour centres are formed within the focal region and the laser is terminated when a desired number of colour centres have been formed. The method enables colour centres to be formed in a crystal with a high degree of control in terms of both the number and location of colour centres within the crystal, and a degree of control over other parameters such as colour centre orientation and local environment. In particular, it is possible to form a well-defined pattern of colour centres within a crystal.

Characteristics of polarizable particles in a fluid are detected using an optical cavity comprising opposed optical reflectors containing the fluid. A particle is introduced through the fluid into the optical cavity. The particle may be transiently in the cavity or optically trapped. The optical cavity containing the particle is illuminated with light that excites resonance of an optical mode of the optical cavity that is affected by the particle. A measurement of a parameter of the excited resonance is derived, for example while tuning through the resonance. Repeated measurements may be used to derive a measure of a characteristic of the particle that is dependent on the motion of the particle in the optical cavity.

There is provided a method of fabricating a trapped vacancy in a crystal lattice of a target comprising: positioning the target in a laser system, the target containing vacancy trapping elements within the crystal lattice; modifying the crystal lattice within the target by using a laser to generate a lattice vacancy; and annealing the target to cause the lattice vacancy to migrate and be captured by a vacancy trapping element to form the trapped vacancy in the crystal lattice.

A sensor comprises a pair of mirrors () opposed along an optical axis and shaped to provide an optical cavity with stable resonance in at least one mode and having a cavity length of at most 50 &#x3bc;m. An actuator system is arranged to move the mirrors relative to each other along the length of the optical cavity for tuning the wavelength of the mode of said cavity. A chemical sample is introduced inside the optical cavity using a sample introduction system (). An EM radiation source () illuminates the cavity and a detector () detects the EM radiation emitted from, transmitted through, or reflected from the optical cavity.
