An exemplary trial component is configured to be attached to a resected bone having a resection surface, and includes a body portion and a sliding fastening mechanism movably coupled to the body portion. The body portion has an articular surface, a bone-facing surface, and at least one drill guide extending through the articular surface and the bone-facing surface. The sliding fastening mechanism includes at least one post extending beyond the bone-facing surface, and the post is operable to engage the resection surface to retain the position of the sliding fastening mechanism relative to the bone. When attached to the bone, the trial component is structured to selectively retain the position of the body portion relative to the bone, and to selectively permit adjustment of the position of the body portion relative to the bone.

Unicondylar tibia implant devices having a bone-facing, distal side that can be detailed with cement fixation features and may include any of or a plurality of grooves, pegs, fins, rails, cavities, and/or coating whereby the geometry of the implant device improves implant-to-cement or cement-to-bone fixation characteristics exceeding that of a traditional flat surface. The implant device may also include a proximal side facing away from the bone-facing, distal side and having a geometry that provides either articulation with (cartilage and meniscal substituting) or receipt of a secondary device coupleable to the implant device on the distal side of the secondary device that features an away-from-bone facing articulating feature. Additionally, the geometry of the implant device in anterior-posterior and medial-lateral directions, among other directions, provides a variety of improvements relative to currently available devices.

Embodiments of the invention include a knee arthroplasty trialing system and method with a femoral component and a tibial trial that has one or more spacers and one or more articular trials. Some embodiments include spacers and articular trials that may be moved in and out of the joint space without significantly distracting the femoral component away from the tibial trial. Some spacers and trials are configured to be inserted and removed from a joint space substantially along an anterior-posterior axis.

Cutting guide and method

Trial joint inserts have posts at different positions relative to the base. During joint replacement surgery, a surgeon can test different positions for a post using a trial insert, identify a suitable position for the post, and then select a permanent insert with a post in the desired position. The devices and methods in this application allow a surgeon to provide an individualized joint replacement for a patient. Joint inserts may be configured so the post moves relative to the base. The post may be adjustably positionable, may lock in place, or may be actuated by a resistance member such as a spring.

A patient specific guide block for a knee includes a plurality of bone interfacing portions and a cutting slot. The plurality of bone interfacing portions are configured to overlie portions of an end of a bone. The bone interfacing portions each have a surface that is generally a negative of the portion of the bone that the respective bone interfacing portion overlies. The bone interfacing portions are angularly offset from each other such that a first of the bone interfacing portions overlies an anterior portion of the bone, and a second of the bone interfacing portions overlies a portion of bone generally perpendicular to the anterior portion of bone. The cutting slot is oriented in a fixed position relative to the bone interfacing portions such that the cutting slot directs a cutting tool at a fixed angle and at a fixed depth relative to the bone interfacing portions.

Trial joint inserts may have posts that slide along a base, compressing or extending a resistance member, such as a spring, as the post slides. During joint replacement surgery, a surgeon can test resistance members with different amounts of resistance using a trial insert, identify a suitable resistance for the resistance member, and then select a permanent insert with a resistance member having the desired resistance. The systems, devices, and methods of this application allow a surgeon to provide an individualized joint replacement for a patient.

In one embodiment, a prosthetic component includes a plurality of fixation pads coupled to a body portion. The fixation pads may be formed of a first material suitable for attachment to bone, and the body portion may be formed of a second material different from the first material and suitable to provide a bearing surface for a joint.

Implants, and processes for installing them, which replace the medial condyle and portions of the patellofemoral channel but preferably not portions of the lateral condyle that articulate relative to the tibia. Processes are provided which allow proper location and orientation of an anterior resection and a distal resection on the femur, which make use of a transition point which can be designated on the bone, for navigating proper positioning of such implants. Proper positioning of the implant relative to the femur for insuring a smooth transition between lateral portions of the implant and the lateral condyle is thus reduced to determining proper medial/lateral location of the implant on the anterior and distal resections. Such implants and processes can allow, among other things, for controlled location and orientation of an implant on the bone which saves lateral compartment bone, which eliminates the need to sacrifice the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments, and which is adapted for minimally invasive surgery with its attendant benefits.

An implant having components comprising an oxidized zirconium bearing surface adapted to decrease pain, lower friction, and minimize wear when coupled with natural femoral articular cartilage. The implant components also provide for reduced backside wear effects in fixed and mobile implants. The implant components further provide for more ideal wear coupling between components in mobile bearing implants.
