An engine component assembly includes a first engine component having a hot surface in thermal communication with a hot combustion gas flow and a cooling surface with at least one cavity. A second engine component is spaced from the cooling surface, and includes at least one cooling aperture. The cooling aperture is arranged such that cooling fluid impinges on the cooling surface at an angle.

Engine component assembly

An apparatus for an impingement hole for an engine component of a gas turbine engine includes an impingement baffle. The impingement baffle is spaced from an impingement surface and includes a plurality of impingement holes for providing an impingement flow to the impingement surface. The impingement holes can have an angled upstream edge such that an inlet has a greater cross-sectional area than an outlet. The walls of the impingement holes can have a hood to provide a higher shear flow content to minimize dust accumulation on the impingement surface.

Impingement holes for a turbine engine component

An apparatus and method for flowing cooling air through an outer wall of an engine component such as an airfoil. The airfoil having the outer wall can include an opening. A framework can be disposed in the opening adapted to reduce the required flow through the opening to increase the efficiency of the engine and improve cooling.

A method and apparatus for an airfoil in a gas turbine engine can include an outer surface bounding an interior. At least one flow channel can be defined among one or more full-length and partial-length ribs to further define a cooling circuit within the airfoil. The cooling circuit can have at least one tip turn at the partial-length rib, having at least on fastback turbulator disposed at least partially within the tip turn.

Airfoil for a gas turbine engine

A turbine system includes a turbine shroud segment. The turbine shroud segment includes a backside, a flow path surface opposite to the back side and configured to be disposed adjacent a hot gas path of the turbine system, and side walls extending between the backside of the turbine shroud segment and the flow path surface of the turbine shroud segment. The turbine shroud segment also includes cooling channels disposed in a thickness of the turbine shroud segment between the backside and the flow path surface, where each cooling channel includes an outlet at one of the side walls of the turbine shroud segment.

A structure for disrupting the flow of a fluid comprises and a second lateral wall spaced apart from one another, yet joined, by a floor and a ceiling; and, (b) a vorticor pin extending in a direction parallel to an X-axis, the vorticor pin concurrently rising above and extending away from the floor to a height, in a direction parallel to a Y-axis, the vorticor pin comprising: (i) a front surface extending incompletely between the first lateral wall and the second lateral wall, the front surface extending above the floor and having an arcuate portion that is transverse with respect to a Z-axis, which is perpendicular to the X-axis and the Y-axis, and (ii) a rear surface extending between the first lateral wall and the second lateral wall, the rear surface extending between the front surface and the floor, the rear surface having an inclining section that tapers in height, taken parallel to the Y-axis, in a direction parallel to the Z-axis.

A ceramic airfoil is provided. The ceramic airfoil may include a leading edge, a trailing edge, and a pair of sidewalls. The pair of sidewalls may include a suction sidewall and a pressure sidewall spaced apart in a widthwise direction and extending in the chordwise direction between the leading edge and the trailing edge. The pair of sidewalls may also define cooling cavity and a plurality of internal cooling passages downstream of the cooling cavity to receive a pressurized cooling airflow. The internal cooling passages may be defined across a diffusion section with a set diffusion length, and include one or more predefined ratios or angles.

Turbine airfoil trailing edge cooling passage

A hot gas path component for an engine may generally include a substrate extending between an outer surface and an inner surface opposite the outer surface. The outer surface may be configured to be exposed to a hot gas path of the engine. In addition, the substrate may be formed from a non-metallic composite material. The hot gas path component may also include a thermal coating disposed on the inner surface of the substrate. The thermal coating may be applied to the inner surface so as to have a non-uniform distribution along at least a portion of the inner surface, wherein the non-uniform distribution provides for change in a thermal gradient experienced across the hot gas path component between the outer and inner surfaces of the substrate.

Internal thermal coatings for engine components

An engine component with particulate mitigation features is provided. The engine component comprises an internal engine component surface having a cooling flow path on one side thereof and a second component adjacent to the first component. The second component, for example an insert, may have a plurality of openings forming an array wherein the openings extend through the second component at a non-orthogonal angle to the surface of the second component.

Angled impingement insert

The present application provides a thermal imaging and machining system for a machine component. The thermal imaging and machining system may include a machining subsystem with a machining device for drilling one or more holes in the machine component and a thermal inspection subsystem positioned about the machining subsystem. The thermal inspection subsystem may include an imager and one or more fluid supply lines such that a thermal response of the holes in the machine component may be determined.

Thermal inspection and machining systems and methods of use

In one embodiment, a system includes a sight tube configured to optically communicate with an interior of a rotary machine via insertion within an inspection port. The sight tube includes a window and multiple openings configured to direct purge air across the window. The system also includes a curtain tube disposed about the sight tube and configured to direct purge air from a first air source to the openings via a first passage formed between an inner surface of the curtain tube and an outer surface of the sight tube. The curtain tube includes multiple outlets configured to direct curtain air around the window, and the curtain tube is configured to direct the curtain air from a second air source to the outlets via a second passage formed between an outer surface of the curtain tube and an inner surface of the inspection port.

System for providing cooling and purging air flow to a rotary machine online monitoring system

A thermal inspection system includes a fluid source configured to supply a warm flow and a cool flow, indirectly or directly, to internal passage(s) of a component. The system includes an imager configured to capture a time series of images corresponding to a transient thermal response of the component to the warm and cool flows. The system further includes at least one flow meter configured to measure the warm and cool flows supplied to the component and a processor operably connected to the imager. The processor determines the transient thermal response of the component around a transition time. The flow supplied to the component switches from the warm flow to the cool flow at the transition time. The processor compares the transient thermal response around the transition time with one or more baseline values or with an acceptable range of values to determine if the component meets a desired specification.

Thermal inspection systems

A method for measuring a flow rate through a cooling hole of a film cooled part includes the steps of 1) measuring a transient thermal response of an internal surface temperature corresponding solely to an inside portion of a cooling hole for a film cooled part resulting from a flow of fluid through the part, the fluid having an initial temperature that is different from an initial temperature of the film cooled part, 2) mathematically characterizing the transient thermal response, and 3) determining the cooling hole flow rate from the mathematical characterization.

Method for quantifying hole flow rates in film cooled parts

A method of thermal inspection of a part having at least one internal cavity is provided. The method includes flowing a fluid through the at least one internal cavity. The method also includes measuring a temperature at one or more locations on the part over time. The method further includes calculating at least one of a first and a second derivative of the temperature with respect to time. The method also includes comparing at least one of the first or the second derivative to one or more baseline values to determine if the part meets a desired specification.

System and method for thermal inspection of parts

A thermal measurement system includes a number of detectors configured to receive radiation within respective wavelength ranges. The system also includes a mirror configured to selectively direct the radiation from an object to each of the detectors. The system further includes an actuator mechanically coupled to the mirror and configured to rotate the mirror through a number of angles. The system also includes an optical and probe subsystem disposed between the object and the mirror to focus the radiation on to the mirror.
