Electromagnetic effect testing

A method comprises collecting a data set of field characterization measurements at a location inside a reverberant cavity excited by signals having multiple discrete electromagnetic frequencies; and performing a number (n) of circular shifts on the data set by a frequency step (&#x394;f) and computing a covariance-based coefficient at each shift until the coefficient indicates a lack of correlation. The method further comprises computing a quality factor (Q) of the reverberant cavity as fc/(&#x394;f&#xd7;n), where fc is center frequency of the data set.

An apparatus for measuring the level of fuel in a fuel tank is disclosed. The apparatus comprises an in-tank measuring system that provides an oscillating output signal generated, for example, by an oscillator such as a multivibrator, where the oscillating output signal has a frequency corresponding to the fuel level. The in-tank measuring system includes a capacitive fuel probe mounted within the fuel tank to contact the fuel. The fuel probe has a capacitance that is a function of the level of the fuel. The oscillator is configured for mounting within the fuel tank at a position in close proximity to the capacitive fuel probe. The oscillator circuit uses the capacitance of the fuel probe to generate the oscillating output signal. A communication path communicates the oscillating output signal from the clock circuit to a circuit exterior to the fuel tank.

Fuel level measurement using in-tank measuring system

A method for generating sensor data is presented. A number of wireless power signals is sent to a group of sensor units. A number of wireless data collection signals is sent to the group of sensor units after the number of wireless power signals have been sent to the group of sensor units. Sensor data in a number of wireless response signals is received from the group of sensor units.

Wireless fuel sensor system

A sensor device includes a capacitive probe including a first conductor and a second conductor. The sensor device also includes a radio to generate a signal based on a measurement associated with the capacitive probe and to provide the signal to the first conductor for transmission using the capacitive probe as a transmission antenna.

An apparatus comprises a structure including a cavity that, when excited with electromagnetic energy, produces an electric field having randomized distribution of field amplitude and polarity. The apparatus further comprises a sensor within the cavity. The sensor has a plurality of antennas for wirelessly harvesting operating power along different paths within the cavity.

Wireless power harvesting along multiple paths in a reverberent cavity

A highly resistive wire includes a non-metallic wire material having a resistance of at least ten kilo-ohms per meter. In one embodiment, the wire material can be fashioned from a carbon-loaded plastic material, having an inclusion of carbon particles in a quantity that yields a resistance of no less than 10 kilo-ohms per meter. In another embodiment, the wire can include a plurality of strands of wire material where each of the strands is surrounded by a thin layer of conductive or semi-conductive material. The highly resistive wire can be used as a single strand, or as a bundle of strands, as wiring in a structure prone to transient electrical or electromagnetic events, such as static discharge or lightning strikes, that might otherwise lead to damage of the structure.

A method and associated wireless monitor and data analysis system are provided. The method includes installing one or more of a plurality of wireless monitors at respective locations onboard a complex system on which a wireless system of interest is installed or planned for installation. The method may then include by the plurality of wireless monitors, emulating the wireless system of interest, and recording data related to performance of the wireless system of interest at one or more recorded times over a plurality of operating conditions of the complex system. The method may also include by the plurality of wireless monitors, collecting data including the respective locations of the wireless monitors correlated with respective recorded data and recorded times. In this regard, the collected data for the plurality of wireless monitors may be retrievable for analysis of the wireless system of interest based thereon.

Onboard wireless performance testing

A method and apparatus for monitoring an interior of a fuel tank. Information about a fuel level and moisture in the interior of the fuel tank of a platform is generated using a fuel sensor unit in the interior of the fuel tank. The fuel sensor unit comprises a sensor configured to be located in the interior of the fuel tank and generate information about the fuel level in the fuel tank and the moisture in the fuel tank and a wireless unit electrically connected to the sensor. The wireless unit is configured to receive the information from the sensor and transmit the information using wireless signals. A number of actions is identified based on the information about the interior of the fuel tank.

An aircraft design system comprising a components database having designs for components configured for use in an aircraft, a materials database having materials selected for desired types of wireless signal propagation, and a boundary designer. The boundary designer is configured to identify a configuration for wireless networks in the aircraft. The boundary designer is further configured to select a number of boundaries for the wireless networks that provide a desired propagation of wireless signals for the wireless networks. The boundary designer is further configured to select a configuration for a number of the components from the designs in the components database and select a number of materials for the number of the components to form the number of boundaries for the wireless networks.

A structure is described that includes a first faying surface, a second faying surface for creating an electrical bond with the first faying surface, and a sensor operatively placed proximate the first faying surface and the second faying surface. The sensor includes a current port for injecting a fixed current through the electrical bond, a voltage port for sensing a voltage across the electrical bond induced by the fixed current, a processing device programmed to determine a resistance of the electrical bond based on the fixed current and sensed voltage, and a wireless interface for transmitting at least one of the sensed voltage and the determined resistance to an external device.

Methods and systems for automated measurement of electrical bonds

A method and apparatus for operating a sensor system. A first wireless signal is transmitted from a base station to a sensor unit. At least a portion of the first wireless signal is changed into power for the sensor unit using a power harvesting unit in the sensor unit. Information is received from a number of sensors associated with the sensor unit. The information is transmitted to the base station using a second wireless signal.

Method and apparatus for wireless sensing with power harvesting of a wireless signal

Technologies are described herein for wirelessly measuring liquid quantity in an enclosure. According to various aspects, an incident electromagnetic wave is transmitted within a conductive enclosure. One or more rebound electromagnetic waves that correspond to the incident electromagnetic wave are received. Using the rebound electromagnetic waves, a transfer function of the rebound electromagnetic waves is measured and a quantity of liquid stored in the enclosure is calculated based on the measured transfer function.
