Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer readable media are provided for determining whether to decommission a particular cell site. Data is received corresponding to a plurality of user devices that have registered with the particular cell site and a determination is reached that a first set of user devices of the plurality of user devices utilizes the particular cell site as a home site. For each user device of the first set of user devices, a customer profile is determined. Based on the customer profile, radio access technology capabilities are determined for each user device of the first set of user devices, and based on the customer profile and the radio access technology capabilities of each user device of the first set of user devices, the particular cell site is ranked as a candidate to be decommissioned.

Systems and methods are provided for managing network configurations. In aspects, fixed wireless access-capable devices can be identified by a network manager to aggregate network connections. This may be utilized to manage congestion at a network node such that multiple direct connections with the network node are aggregated into fewer direct connections with the network node, using a fixed wireless access-capable device as an intermediary.

Managing network configurations

In a wireless User Equipment (UE), a serving radio wirelessly exchanges data with a serving cell over a serving radio band. The wireless UE wirelessly receives serving signaling that indicates serving uplink interference for the serving radio band at the serving cell. A neighbor radio in the UE wirelessly receives neighbor signaling. UE circuitry determines serving signal strength and the serving uplink interference for the serving cell. The UE circuitry determines neighbor signal strength for the neighbor cell. The UE circuitry compares the serving uplink interference and the serving signal strength to the neighbor signal strength, and in response, generates a handover request for the neighbor cell. The serving radio wirelessly transfers the handover request to the serving cell, and in response, the neighbor radio wirelessly exchanges additional data with the neighbor cell over the neighbor radio band.

Wireless communication handover responsive to uplink interference at a serving cell

Methods and systems are provided for dynamically adjusting the beamform of an antenna array. An intended beamform, which should ideally be propagated by an antenna array based on a supply of a first set of signals, may not be realized if one or more antenna elements of the antenna array are experiencing a fault. Utilizing various methods, one or more faulty antenna elements of the antenna array are identified and a second set of signals is calculated that, when propagated by one or more operational antenna elements, yield an optimized beamform, wherein the optimized beamform at least partially recovers a portion of a coverage gap.

Dynamic beam management of an antenna array with a faulty element

A wireless communication network hands-over wireless User Equipment (UE) from a serving cell to a neighbor cell. The serving cell wirelessly exchanges data with the wireless UE and determines uplink interference for a radio band. The serving cell wirelessly transfers an uplink interference offset to the wireless UE that indicates the uplink interference at the serving cell for the radio band. The wireless UE uses the uplink interference offset to trigger a handover request to the serving cell. The handover request indicates downlink signal strength at the wireless UE for the serving cell. The serving cell initiates a handover to a neighbor cell responsive to a combination of the downlink signal strength at the wireless UE and the uplink interference for the serving cell falling below a handover threshold. After the handover, the neighbor cell wirelessly exchanges data with the wireless UE over a different radio band.

Methods and systems are provided for dynamic performance of antenna calibration. To ensure channel reciprocity of downlink and uplink channels, antenna calibration must be performed with some degree of regularity. The present disclosure includes systems and methods for performing antenna calibration, wherein noise levels are determined at various subframes of wireless telecommunication frame structures as a basis for determining when the calibration signal should be transmitted in an OFDM symbol. Utilizing the disclosed systems and methods yields preferred antenna calibration, avoiding gain degradations caused by decreases in propagation performance.

When a base station groups a given user equipment device (UE) together with one or more other UEs for multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) service, the base station will predict a level of RF correlation between the given UE and the one or more other UEs of the group (e.g., based angular separation between beam direction of the UE and beam direction of each of the one or more other UEs). And the base station will use that predicted level of RF correlation as a basis to adjust a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) that the base station and the given UE will use for data communication with each other, so as to help improve data communication between the base station and the given UE in the presence of the predicted RF correlation.

Use of RF correlation between UEs in a MU-MIMO group as a basis to bias MCS

In accordance with the disclosure, when a base station is serving at least a threshold quantity of devices and the base station is allocating at least a threshold quantity of its air-interface resources per unit time, the base station will disable carrier-aggregation service, so as to help minimize or eliminate instances where the base station's carriers would be used as secondary component carriers for carrier-aggregation service and would not support MU-MIMO service. By disabling carrier-aggregation service in that scenario, air-interface resources that might otherwise have been used for secondary-component-carrier transmission without MU-MIMO service may then instead be available for use with MU-MIMO service, which may help to improve spectral efficiency.

An RF fingerprint of the environment of a base station antenna will be regularly monitored, such as by regularly evaluating various RF metrics of uplink reflections of downlink transmission from the antenna. Through regular monitoring of the RF fingerprint, a baseline RF fingerprint could be established. And through continued monitoring of the RF fingerprint, an unexpected change in the RF fingerprint could then be detected, as an indication that the antenna's RF beam direction may have changed. In response to detecting the unexpected change in the antenna's RF fingerprint, the antenna's RF beam direction could then be newly determined, and the antenna's configuration record could be updated to indicate the newly determined RF beam direction.

Method and system for updating configuration record of base station antenna

A method is disclosed for determining whether a communication or communication session requested by or directed to a user equipment device (UE) is a foreground or background communication, based on context information derived about the communication and in the absence of any direct indication from the UE. If it is determined that the communication is foreground, then no action is taken to limit the communication. If it is determined that the communication is foreground, then an action is taken to limit allocation of at least one network resource need for the communication. As a further aspect, the procedure for context-based determination is then initiated contingent upon the determination that the UE is roaming in a wireless network of a service provider different from a home service provider.

Distinguishing between foreground and background communications based on analysis of context information

A method and system is disclosed for inter-technology diversity. A transmitting device may concurrently transmit a communication unit, such as a data packet, on two or more different air interfaces to a receiving device. The receiving device may concurrently receive the two or more transmissions on two or more corresponding air interfaces, and may then apply forward error correction to the two or more received communication unit in order to recover an error-free version of the communication unit. The transmitting device could be a multi-modal base station (or other access element) of a wireless communication system, and the receiving device could be a multi-modal access terminal (AT) or other user equipment (UE). Additionally or alternatively, the transmitting device could be an AT or UE, and the receiving device could be a base station.

Inter-technology diversity in wireless communications

Disclosed herein is a method and corresponding system for management of neighbor scanning in a cellular wireless communication system. A radio access network (RAN) sends, and a mobile station receives, a neighbor list update message (NLUM) containing a plurality of different neighbor lists. The mobile station then selects one of the neighbor lists based on a determined first rank-ordering of its active set members. Once the mobile station selects one of the neighbor lists, the mobile station scans the neighbors listed in the selected neighbor list in accordance with the selected neighbor list. If the mobile station detects a change in rank-ordering from the determined first rank-ordering to another rank-ordering, the mobile station may select and transition to another one of the neighbor lists and may begin to scan the neighbors listed in the selected other neighbor list in accordance with the selected other neighbor list.

A wireless communication device determines user interface activity initiated by a user application. The wireless communication device determines a timer setting based on the user interface activity initiated by the user application. The wireless communication device wirelessly transfers the timer setting to a wireless communication network. The wireless communication device exchanges wireless communications initiated by the user application with the wireless communication network. The wireless communication network uses a dormancy timer based on the user interface activity initiated by the user application.

A method and a communication device for accessing a communication system are disclosed. The method includes determining that an application requesting access to the communication system requires preferred access to the communication system and requesting access to the communication system using a least preferred access channel from a preferred roaming list comprising a plurality of access channels. An access node of a communication system is further disclosed. The access node includes a processor to determine whether the communication system supports a preferred access to the communication system by at least one authorized communication device of the plurality of communication devices, and transmit an indication that the communication system supports the preferred access to the communication system by the at least one authorized communication device.

A wireless access node and media session extension method configured to extend a media session in a wireless network are provided. The wireless access node in one example embodiment includes a communication interface configured to exchange wireless communications with a user equipment (UE), a storage system configured to store a UE fail state corresponding to the UE of a current media session and store an extended dormancy time period, and a processing system coupled to the communication interface and to the storage system, with the processing system configured to obtain the UE fail state, if the UE fail state is true, then load the extended dormancy time period into a dormancy timer corresponding to the UE, and if the dormancy timer expires, then maintain one or both of a traffic channel and a signaling channel between the wireless access node and the UE.
