Embodiments include methods and systems for using, creating and maintaining goal-oriented, dialog systems (i.e., transactional bots) that provide interfaces to application functionality. The methods and systems of the embodiments provide a bot that may learn in supervised learning and reinforcement learning from conversational examples provided by domain experts and from interaction with users. Conversational bots may be created to interact using both text and/or application programming interface (API) calls. A developer may configure a bot that interfaces with an application back-end where behavior of the bot may be controlled by use of masking actions. A specification for the bot may be flexibly designed to specify how developer code may be organized, for example, as masking operations on the possible actions the bot may execute. Additionally, the methods and systems may automatically infer the best state representation during a dialog so a state variable need not be predefined.

Deep learning of bots through examples and experience

A head-mounted device (HMD) whose circumference is dynamically adjustable to conform to different head sizes and shapes is disclosed herein. The HMD includes a front-end and back-end housing. The front-end housing includes a first compute unit, and the back-end housing includes a second compute unit. The HMD also includes two adjustable flex fit arms that connect the front-end housing to the back-end housing. The HMD has an enclosed rounded boundary that is placeable around a user's head. The HMD also includes a nested flexible cable ribbon, which is nested within a cavity of one of the arms and which includes both a static bend and a dynamic bend. The bend radius for the dynamic bend is larger than the bend radius of the static bend. The dynamic bend enables the nested flexible cable ribbon to expand or contract when the circumference of the enclosed rounded boundary changes.

Conversational interactions between humans and computer systems can be provided by a computer system that classifies an input by conversation type, and provides human authored responses for conversation types. The input classification can be performed using trained binary classifiers. Training can be performed by labeling inputs as either positive or negative examples of a conversation type. Conversational responses can be authored by the same individuals that label the inputs used in training the classifiers. In some cases, the process of training classifiers can result in a suggestion of a new conversation type, for which human authors can label inputs for a new classifier and write content for responses for that new conversation type.

Generating computer responses to social conversational inputs

Various embodiments provide a wearable camera that can be worn by a user. The wearable camera includes an accelerometer that can be used to detect camera motion. Input can be provided to the camera in the form of one or more taps which have an associated motion profile, as sensed by the accelerometer. The tap or taps can be mapped to camera functionality to activate the functionality.

A system and method for integrating incremental speech recognition in dialog systems. An example system configured to practice the method receives incremental speech recognition results of user speech as part of a dialog with a user, and copies a dialog manager operating on the user speech to generate temporary instances of the dialog manager. Then the system evaluates actions the temporary instances of the dialog manager would take based on the incremental speech recognition results, and identifies an action that would advance the dialog and a corresponding temporary instance of the dialog manager. The system can then execute the action in the dialog and optionally replace the dialog manager with the corresponding temporary instance of the dialog manager. The action can include making a turn-taking decision in the dialog, such as whether, what, and when to speak or whether to be silent.

Incremental speech recognition for dialog systems

A garment clip is disclosed. The garment clip houses a camera and comprising a first portion housing operational circuitry and a second portion supporting an image capture component. The second portion has a mass which is less than the first portion. The first and second portions are connected in a configuration such that, when the clip is secured to the garment, the image capture component faces outwardly and the first portion is at least partially concealed by the garment.
