A turbocharger includes a shaft extending between a first shaft end coupled to a turbine wheel, and a second shaft end coupled to a compressor wheel. The turbocharger also includes a bearing housing assembly including a bearing housing presenting an interior surface having a first diameter. The interior surface defines a bearing housing interior. A bushing is disposed in the bearing housing interior, extends between first and second bushing ends, is coupled to the shaft, and includes a first anti-rotation component. A retention shoulder extends away from the interior surface and radially inward proximate to one of the first and second bushing ends, and presents an inner surface having a second diameter less than the first diameter to limit axial movement of the bushing. The retention shoulder includes a second anti-rotation component engagable with the first anti-rotation component to limit rotational movement between the bushing and the bearing housing.

Bearing housing assembly and turbocharger including the same

A turbocharger includes a bearing housing defining an interior. The turbocharger also includes a shaft and a thrust bearing assembly disposed about the shaft. The thrust bearing assembly includes a thrust plate defining a bore configured to receive the shaft and having a first thrust surface which is integral. The thrust bearing assembly also includes a bearing having a second thrust surface which is integral. The thrust bearing assembly further includes a washer disposed between the thrust plate and the bearing. The washer has a third thrust surface which is integral, and an opposite fourth thrust surface which is integral. The third thrust surface faces the first thrust surface for engagement with the first thrust surface, and the fourth thrust surface faces the second thrust surface for engagement with the second thrust surface.

The bearing body defines a central bore through which the rotating shaft extends. The thrust bearing includes tapered lands formed in the bearing surface at spaced arcuate locations extending radially outward of the second bore. Each tapered land includes a first ramp extending from within the bearing body to the bearing surface along a gradient, a flat extending from the first ramp along the bearing surface, and a second ramp extending from the flat into the bearing body along the gradient. Rotation of the shaft and the collar in either direction equally pressurizes a working fluid between the collar and the bearing surface.

Bi-rotational thrust bearing for a turbocharger

A number of variations may include a product for use with a turbocharger system may include a housing with a rotor wheel rotatable relative to the housing. The rotor wheel may have a front face with blades disposed in a gas stream and a back wall facing the housing. The rotor wheel may generate thrust loads. A thrust bearing may be positioned on the housing and may face the back wall. The thrust bearing may be configured to directly absorb the thrust loads from the rotor wheel.
