One embodiment of the present invention sets forth a technique for generating audio for a speaker system. The technique includes receiving an audio input signal, a first location associated with the audio input signal, a first geometric model of the speaker system, and a second geometric model of one or more surfaces in proximity to the speaker system. The technique also includes generating a plurality of output signals for a plurality of speaker drivers in the speaker system based on the audio input signal, the first location, and the first and second geometric models. The technique further includes transmitting the plurality of output signals to the plurality of speaker drivers, wherein the plurality of speaker drivers emit audio that corresponds to the plurality of output signals, the emitted audio rendering a sound corresponding to the audio input signal at the first location.

A headphone system includes a calibration microphone for performing a calibration routine with a user. The calibration microphone receives a stimulus signal emitted by the headphone system and generates a response signal indicating variations in the stimulus signal that arise due to physiological attributes of the user. Based on the stimulus signal and the response signal, the calibration engine generates response data. The calibration engine processes the response data based on a headphone transfer function (HPTF) associated with the headphone system in order to create an inverse filter that can reduce or remove acoustic variations caused by the headphone system. The calibration engine generates a personalized HRTF for the user based on the response data and the inverse filter. The personalized HRTF can be used to implement highly accurate 3D audio and is thereby well-suited for applications to immersive audio and audio-visual entertainment.

Personalized three-dimensional audio

One or more embodiments include techniques for generating immersive audio for an acoustic system. The techniques include determining an apparent location associated with a portion of audio; calculating, for each speaker included in a plurality of speakers of the acoustic system, a perceptual distance between the speaker and the apparent location; selecting a subset of speakers included in the plurality of speakers based on the perceptual distances between the plurality of speakers and the apparent location; generating a set of filters based on the subset of speakers and one or more target characteristics of the acoustic system; and generating, for each speaker included in the subset of speakers, a speaker signal using one or more filters included in the set of filters.

Immersive sound reproduction using multiple transducers

Techniques for calibrating listening devices are disclosed herein. The techniques include emitting a predetermined audio signal using an outward-facing transducer located on a first portion of a head-mounted device worn by the user, receiving the predetermined audio signal at a microphone located on a second portion of the head-mounted device, the second portion being different from the first portion, determining a transfer function for the user based on the received predetermined audio signal, and applying the transfer function to audio signals transmitted to the user.

Calibrating listening devices

A speaker system is provided with a cabinet with a front face. At least one forward-firing driver is supported by the cabinet to project sound along a first axis that is generally perpendicular to the front face of the cabinet. At least one upward-firing driver is supported by the cabinet and arranged above the at least one forward-firing driver to project high frequency sound along a second axis that is angularly offset from the first axis at an acute splay angle. A controller is programmed to provide a mid-range frequency component of a front audio channel to the at least one forward-firing driver, and to provide a high frequency component of a top audio channel to the upward-firing driver.

Systems and methods to calibrate listening devices are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a method to calibrate earphones includes determining a Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTF) corresponding to different parts of a user's anatomy (e.g., one or both of a listener's pinnae). The resulting HRTFs are combined to form a composite HRTF. In some embodiments, a first and a second HRTF are respectively determined for a first and second part of the user's anatomy. A composite HRTF of the user is generated by combining portions of the first and second HRTFs.

Systems and methods of calibrating earphones

Systems and methods of calibrating listening devices are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method of calibrating a listening device (e.g., a headset) includes determining head related transfer functions (HRTF) corresponding to different parts of the user's anatomy. The resulting HRTFs are combined to form a composite HRTF.

In an embodiment, a subordinate mobile communication device (SMCD) receives a content access profile from a dispatcher. The content access profile includes (i) proxy server selection criteria to facilitate the SMCD to select between a plurality of proxy servers based on a current transport mechanism type (e.g., WiFi, 3G, Satellite, etc.), each of the plurality of proxy servers being configured by the dispatcher to provide different degrees of support for Internet-based services to the SMCD, and/or (ii) a set of Internet-based service access rules to facilitate the SMCD to independently determine whether to grant or deny access by the SMCD to Internet-based services based on the current transport mechanism type of a connection between the SMCD and an access network. The SMCD determines its current transport mechanism type and uses the content access profile to selectively engage with a given Internet-based service.
