While providing a storage service to a client system, a storage system maintains a complete set of storage service metadata for the service on the same storage device that stores the user data received from the client system. When an event is detected that requires the storage service to be moved to a new storage system, the storage service can be moved to a new storage system by moving the storage device containing both the user data and the storage service metadata to the new storage system. The new storage system detects the storage device that has been moved, and detects the storage service metadata and user data. The new storage system then uses the storage service metadata and user data from the storage device to immediately reestablish the storage service with the client system, without having to perform a separate step of copying the storage service metadata from the previous storage system.

Systems, methods, and computer readable medium for optimizing storage allocations based on system resources are disclosed. According to one aspect, the subject matter described herein includes a method for dynamic, policy-based allocation of system resources. The method includes maintaining statistics in connection with like system resources. Each of the system resources having associated statistics that are suitable for describing a relationship with an allocatable class of resource. A request is received for a resource. In response to receiving the request, one of the like system resources is selected, based on the statistics and a policy, as a best system resource in connection with the allocatable class of resource.

Techniques for memory management are described. A memory management data structure may include a tree structure of nodes each representing a free memory portion of a size used as a key value. The tree may be a modified AVL tree with nodes sorted based on key values corresponding to free memory portion sizes. The data structure may include a first list representing a memory map corresponding to different memory portions where each entry of the first list represents a memory portion with an associated memory address range that is not contiguous with respect to any other memory address range of any other memory portion represented by an entry on the first list. Each entry of the first list representing a free memory portion may be associated with a node of the tree structure.

One or more blocks of source data associated with a data storage system are identified. The one or more blocks of source data are associated with at least a first logical unit that exists in the data storage system. A method is used in managing cache pages. A location pointer is maintained in a dynamic list of entries for cache page cleaning. The dynamic list includes a list of cache pages ordered from most recently used to least recently used. Based on flags associated with the cache pages, a count of the number of cache pages processed for cache page cleaning is maintained. In response to a change in the dynamic list, the location pointer and count are updated based on the processing status of an entry to which the change pertains.

A SAN (storage area network) configuration utility may be used to automatically configure a SAN management system for SAN discovery and management. The SAN configuration utility may be used to identify and verify SAN devices, device firmware, device drivers, etc. for the SAN management system, and to configure the SAN management system to support one or more previously incompatible SAN devices. In one embodiment, the SAN configuration utility may automatically configure the SAN management system to use only the SAN devices that are known to be compatible with the SAN management system. In one embodiment, the SAN configuration utility may automatically modify one or more SAN management system configuration files to support the discovered SAN devices and/or automatically modify one or more SAN devices for support by the SAN management system (e.g. by updating firmware). In one embodiment, the SAN configuration utility may generate one or more SAN configuration reports.
