A circuit interrupter including a line conductor, a neutral conductor, separable contacts, an operating mechanism structured to trip open the separable contacts, a magnetic trip actuator structured to cause the operating mechanism to trip open the separable contacts in response to a short-circuit between the line and neutral conductors, a protection circuit including a self-test circuit structured to perform a self-test and to output a signal in response to failing the self-test, and an electrical component electrically connected between the line and neutral conductors and having an open state and a closed state. The electrical component is structured to switch from the open state to the closed state and cause a short-circuit between the line and neutral conductors in response to receiving the signal from the self-test circuit.

An arc fault detection system includes a high frequency detector module structured to detect first spectral content of power having a frequency in a first frequency range, a number of arc fault circuit interrupters each having separable contacts, a low frequency detector module structured to detect second spectral content of power having a frequency in a second frequency range, a control unit structured to control the separable contacts to trip open, and an arc fault detection unit structured to detect an arc fault based on the detected first and second spectral content of the power and to cause the control unit to control the separable contacts to trip open in response to detecting the arc fault. A communication bus provides communication between the high frequency detector and the arc fault circuit interrupters and the first frequency range includes frequencies that are higher than frequencies in the second frequency range.

Arc fault detection system

A circuit breaker panel includes a control unit structured to generate a control signal and a number of circuit breakers. At least one of the circuit breakers includes a number of sets of separable contacts and is structured to open or close one set of separable contacts based on the control signal. At least one of the circuit breakers is structured to electrically connect between a line and load and includes a power supply structured to convert power from the line and to use the converted power to open or close the set of separable contacts.

A circuit breaker includes first and second terminals structured to electrically connect to a line and a load, respectively, at least one set of separable contacts movable between a closed position and an open position, a first operating mechanism structured to open one set of separable contacts in response to a detected fault condition on the protected circuit, a second operating mechanism structured to open or close one set of separable contacts in response to an external control signal, a remote operation circuit structured to receive the external control signal and to control the second operating mechanism to open or close based on said external control signal, the remote operation circuit including a power supply structured to convert power from the line and to provide the converted power to the second operating mechanism.
