A tissue-removing catheter for removing tissue from a body lumen during a cutting operation includes an elongate catheter body configured for insertion into the body lumen and a tissue-removing element. A motor is operably connected to the tissue-removing element for rotating the tissue-removing element. A sensor is configured to detect a parameter of the catheter body during the cutting operation. A motor control circuit is in electrical communication with the sensor and the motor. During an operational control function, the motor control circuit is configured to receive a signal from the sensor based at least in part on the detected parameter, determine whether the received signal is indicative of inefficient movement of the tissue-removing element, and adjust a rotational speed of the tissue-removing element to increase efficiency of the tissue-removing element if the received signal is indicative of inefficient movement of the tissue-removing element.

Tissue-removing catheter including operational control mechanism

A tissue-removing catheter includes a sensor configured to detect a parameter of the catheter during the cutting operation of the catheter when a tissue-removing element is in a tissue-removing position. A locking control circuit is in electrical communication with the sensor and a locking device. During an operational control function, the locking control circuit receives a signal from the sensor based at least in part on the parameter of the catheter detected during the cutting operation of the catheter. The locking control circuit determines whether the received signal is indicative of a tissue-removing element engaging a non-tissue obstruction. The locking control circuit configures the locking device in its locked configuration to inhibit movement of the tissue-removing element from its tissue-removing position to its neutral position if the received signal is indicative of the tissue-removing element engaging a non-tissue obstruction.

A tissue-removing catheter for removing tissue from a body lumen includes a tissue-removing element. The tissue-removing element may be coupled to a first longitudinal body portion of the catheter body. The first longitudinal body portion may be rotatable along its length and relative to a second longitudinal body portion to adjust the angular position of the first longitudinal body portion relative to the second longitudinal body portion. An angular-positioning mechanism may be operatively connected to the tissue-removing element for rotating the tissue-removing element relative to the second longitudinal body portion about a rotational axis to adjust an angular tissue-removing position of the tissue-removing element, relative to the longitudinal axis of the body lumen, from a first angular tissue-removing position to a second angular tissue-removing position offset from the first angular tissue-removing position.

A tissue-removing catheter for removing tissue from a body lumen includes an elongate catheter body configured for insertion into the body lumen and a tissue-removing element. A side opening in the distal portion of the catheter body is defined by opposite first and second side edges, a proximal edge extending between the first and second side edges, and a distal edge opposite the proximal edge and extending between the first and second side edges. The side opening window has a longitudinal axis extending between the distal and proximal edges. The tissue-removing element is configured to move between a tissue-removing position, in which the tissue-removing element is exposed through the side opening window, and a neutral position, in which the tissue-removing element is positioned inside the distal portion of the catheter. The distal edge is asymmetric about the longitudinal axis of the side opening window.

A tissue-removing catheter for removing tissue from a body lumen includes a tissue-removing. The tissue-removing element may be coupled to a first longitudinal body portion of the catheter body. The first longitudinal body portion may be rotatable along its length and relative to a second longitudinal body portion to adjust the angular position of the first longitudinal body portion relative to the second longitudinal body portion. An angular-displacement sensor may be coupled to the catheter body for detecting an angular displacement of at least the first longitudinal portion of the catheter body relative to the rotational axis when the first longitudinal body portion is rotated about the rotational axis. The tissue-removing element may be rotatable about a rotational axis to adjust an angular tissue-removing position of the tissue-removing element relative to the body lumen when the catheter body is inserted in the body lumen. An angular-displacement sensor may be generally adjacent the tissue-removing element for detecting an angular displacement of the tissue-removing element relative to the body lumen when the tissue-removing element is rotated about the rotational axis.
