A controller may identify an indication to initiate an engine braking procedure associated with an engine of a machine. The controller may obtain, based on identifying the indication to initiate the engine braking procedure, information relating to a requested amount of engine braking power of the engine. The controller may cause one or more components of a variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) of the engine to adjust, and a throttle valve of the engine to adjust, based on the information relating to the requested amount of engine braking power of the engine.

An after-treatment device that includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF) requiring periodic regeneration includes a sensor providing a signal indicative of a soot accumulation and at least one device providing an operating parameter indicative of a work mode of the machine. A controller determines a soot level and a readiness level based on the work mode of the machine, and further classifies the soot level relative to a desired range for initiating a regeneration event and initiates the regeneration event when the soot level falls within the desired range.

Diesel particulate filter regeneration control and method

A system including a nitrogen oxide sensor and a controller is provided. The nitrogen oxide sensor is configured to generate a first signal indicative of nitrogen oxides content in an exhaust gas. The controller is communicably coupled to the nitrogen oxide sensor. The controller configured to receive the first signal indicative of nitrogen oxides content in the exhaust gas. The controller is also configured to receive a second signal corresponding to an operational parameter of a power source. Further, the controller is configured to compare a derivative of the first signal with a derivative of the second signal. The controller is configured to trigger an error counter when an absolute value of the compared derivative crosses a predetermined threshold. Thereafter, the controller is configured to determine a condition of the nitrogen oxide sensor based on a count of the error counter in a predetermined period of time.

Diagnostic system and method for nitrogen oxide sensor

A flame detection system is disclosed. The system may have a flame chamber and a filter, wherein the filter includes filter media configured to collect matter from an engine exhaust. Additionally, the filter may be disposed downstream of the flame chamber. An ignition device may be disposed in the flame chamber and may be configured to ignite a flame in the flame chamber to regenerate the filter. A sensor may be disposed proximate the ignition device, and may be configured to sense a change in electrical conductivity that is indicative of a presence of the flame in the flame chamber.

An emissions control system includes a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) device, one or more monitoring devices and one or more sensors. The system further includes a controller configured to determine an operating emissions gas conversion ratio of the SCR device. The controller is further configured to determine an injection amount of a reduction agent to maintain an operating emissions gas conversion ratio of the SCR device and to adjust the operating emissions gas conversion ratio to a target emissions gas conversion ratio by adjusting the injection amount of the reduction agent to the SCR device. The system utilizes a Time-Temperature model to determine the target emissions gas conversion ratio and/or reduction agent injection ratio. The system further includes a reduction agent injector configured to supply the adjusted injection amount of the reduction agent to the SCR device.

An exhaust component for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust component may have a housing at least partially defining an inlet and an outlet, and a treatment device supported by the housing in communication with exhaust passing from the inlet to the outlet. The exhaust component may also have a life indicator permanently associated with at least one of the housing and the treatment device.

An exhaust system for use with a combustion engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have an exhaust passage, a particulate filter located within the exhaust passage, and a heating device located to selectively heat matter collected within the particulate filter. The exhaust system may also have a controller configured to determine an amount of matter collected within the particulate filter exceeding a threshold amount, and to activate the heating device in a first operating mode to regenerate the particulate filter based on the amount of collected matter. The controller may be further configured to detect a temperature constraining condition of the combustion engine, to determine an amount of oxygen within the flow of exhaust during the temperature constraining condition, and to activate the heating device in a second operating mode to constrain a regeneration temperature of the particulate filter based on the amount of oxygen within the flow of exhaust.

A power train control system for a mobile machine is disclosed. The power train control system has a power source configured to produce a power output, a transmission device operatively connected to receive the power output and propel the mobile machine, and a control module. The control module is configured to receive an indication of a power demand, receive an indication of a current travel speed of the mobile machine, and reference the power demand and the current travel speed with a power train efficiency map to determine a desired power source speed. The power train control system is also configured to control operation of the transmission device to bring a speed of the power source within a predetermined amount of the desired power source speed.

Efficiency based integrated power train control system

Engines that include different combustion strategies for different cylinders may create a power imbalance resulting in undesirable engine vibrations. The engine system of the present disclosure includes a first engine that is operable to produce a high NOx concentration exhaust and a second engine that is operable to produce a low NOx concentration exhaust. The first engine is fluidly connected to a first section of an exhaust passage and the second engine is fluidly connected to a second section of the exhaust passage. The exhaust from the first engine and the exhaust from the second engine are merged in a merged section of the exhaust passage downstream from both the first and second sections of the exhaust passages. The high NOx concentration exhaust may be converted to ammonia for reacting with the low NOx concentration exhaust to arrive at very low NOx concentration from the merged exhaust.

A method of controlling an engine during an engine startup or shutdown condition includes operating a valve to open a port of a combustion chamber to allow fluid to flow between the combustion chamber and the port for at least one entire engine cycle. The method also includes preventing combustion of fuel during a combustion stroke of the at least one engine cycle. The engine cycle occurs during the engine startup or shutdown condition.

Method and apparatus for controlling engine valve timing

A particulate trap regeneration system is provided. The system may include a particulate trap configured to remove one or more types of particulate matter from an exhaust flow of an engine. The system may also include a regeneration device configured to reduce an amount of particulate matter in the particulate trap. The system may further include a controller configured to activate the regeneration device in response to the first to occur of at least three trigger conditions.

A method of controlling an engine having a valve actuation system is provided. The engine is started. A first parameter indicative of a first temperature of the engine is sensed. A second parameter indicative of a second temperature of the engine is sensed. Control system and method for a valve actuator

A method of controlling a variable valve actuation system is provided. A cam assembly is operated to move an intake valve between a first position where the intake valve blocks a flow of fluid and a second position where the intake valve allows a flow of fluid. At least one operating parameter of the engine is sensed. A valve actuation period is determined based on the at least one operating parameter. A valve actuator is engaged with the intake valve to prevent the intake valve from returning to the first position in response to operation of the cam assembly. The valve actuator is released to allow the intake valve to return to the first position at the end of the determined valve actuation period.

Control system and method for variable valve actuation system

An engine valve actuation system is provided. An intake valve is moveable between a first position where the intake valve prevents a flow of fluid relative to the intake valve and a second position where the intake valve allows a flow of fluid relative to the intake valve. A cam assembly is configured to move the intake valve between the first position and the second position. A fluid actuator having a chamber is adapted to selectively prevent the intake valve from moving to the first position. A fluid supply system is adapted to deliver fluid to the chamber of the fluid actuator. A pressure sensor is operatively engaged with the fluid supply system and is adapted to sense the pressure of the fluid within the fluid supply system. A controller is adapted to receive the sensed pressure of the fluid within the fluid supply system, to determine an expected pressure of the fluid within the fluid supply system, to identify when the sensed pressure deviates from the expected pressure, and to generate a responsive fault signal.

System and method for monitoring engine valve actuation

An engine valve actuation system is provided. The system includes an engine valve moveable between a closed position and an open position. A spring is operatively connected to the engine valve to bias the engine valve towards the closed position. An actuator is operatively connected to the engine valve and is operable to selectively engage the engine valve to prevent the engine valve from returning to the closed position and to release the engine valve to allow the engine valve to return to the closed position. A sensor is configured to provide information related to the operation of the actuator. A controller is configured to transmit a signal to the actuator to engage the engine valve to prevent the engine valve from returning to the closed position and to release the engine valve to the allow the engine valve to return to the closed position. The controller is further configured to receive a signal from said sensor and to identify when the actuator fails to engage the engine valve in response to the transmitted signal or when the actuator fails to release the engine valve.
