A filtering medium for removal of solids from a fluid. A solid filtering matrix contains fluid passages that are made up of a plurality of chambers with connecting channels. The chambers have a greater diameter than the connecting channels.

Deposited material sand control media

An actuation system and method, the system including a tubular having a passage, and an assembly disposed with the tubular. The assembly includes a degradable restriction, the restriction only partially blocking the passage prior to being degraded. The assembly is configured to receive and prevent further movement of a restrictor through the tubular prior to the restriction being degraded. The assembly is further configured to release the restrictor when the restriction is degraded.

In one aspect an apparatus for use in a wellbore is disclosed that in one non-limiting embodiment includes a completion assembly that contains a filter section having a tubular with a plurality of through holes filled with a filter material for restricting flow of solid particles through the holes for placement of the filter section across from a zone along the wellbore, a sensor inside the tubular for providing information about a parameter of interest during treatment of and/or production from the zone into the tubular, and a first circuit coupled to the sensor that transmits wireless signals corresponding to measurements made by the sensor to a second circuit that transmits the received signals to the surface.

In one aspect an apparatus for use in a wellbore is disclosed that in one embodiment includes a device or tool conveyable in the wellbore, wherein the device or tool further includes a shape memory member formed into a compressed state, the shape memory device having a glass transition temperature and a heating device associated with the shape memory member configured to heat in the wellbore the shape memory member to or above the glass transition temperature to expand the shape memory member to a second expanded state.

A downhole system includes a tubular having a plurality of spaced apertures radially extending through a wall of the tubular. A section of the tubular blocking radial fluid flow through the wall between an interior and exterior of the tubular. The section arranged from a first end to a second end of the tubular. A plurality of filter pucks respectively inserted into at least some of the plurality of apertures. The filter pucks each including a body configured for insertion in one of the apertures and a filtering element within each body; and, at least one control or monitoring line arranged on the section. Further is a method of controlling sand in a downhole system.

An actuation system and method includes a tubular defining a passage, and an assembly disposed with the tubular. The assembly includes a restriction operatively arranged to receive a restrictor for enabling actuation of the assembly. The restriction includes a degradable material with a protective layer thereon, the degradable material degrading upon exposure to a fluid in the passage and the protective layer isolating the degradable material from the fluid.

Selectively degradable passage restriction and method

A shear component for releasably securing a first component to a second component, the shear component comprising a body having a first end, a second end, an outer wall surface, an inner wall surface defining a cavity, a shear plane, and a core disposed within the cavity and in sliding engagement with the inner wall surface of the body. The core comprises a first position in which the core is disposed in alignment with the shear plane, and a second position in which the core is disposed out of alignment with the shear plane. The shear component can be included in a downhole tool to maintain the downhole tool in the run-in or initial position until being compromised by a stimulus.

Reinforced shear components and methods of using same

A tubular centralizer is secured to the tubular for run in. The profile for run in is small so that damage to the centralizer is minimized during run in. When the string is in position the centralizer is actuated to change shape or volume to engage the surrounding borehole to centralize the tubular for subsequent operations such as cementing or in the case of screens for gravel packing. The centralizer can be a shape memory material that is initially compressed at above its transition temperature to hold the smaller shape. At the desired location after run in it is brought above the transition temperature and changes back to the original shape or volume to centralize the tubular string. The structure can be spaced ring segments or a cohesive ring structure with an undulating profile or radiating blades to create flow spaces in the annulus where it is deployed for flow of a sealing material or gravel, for example.

Wellbore centralizer for tubulars

A subterranean screen system features openings in a base pipe and sleeve sections of a porous material that preferably swells in the borehole to span an annular space around the base pipe. Retainers are mounted to the base pipe in a desired location and mechanically fixated using an internal grip system actuated through the wall of the retainer. A wedging action of slip segments is initiated by an angularly advancing assembly through the wall of the retainer. The retainer can have end rings extending past one or both ends over which the screen sleeve extends. Flat or ridges on the exterior of the retainer or end rings make assembly easier with hand tools to allow for rapid field assembly, if needed. Filtration occurs through the sleeves that abut the borehole wall and into the base pipe openings and to the surface.

An embodiment provides a device that includes a shape memory member having a sealed outer surface and a permeable inner mass and a selected fluid placed and sealed within the inner mass at a first temperature. The selected fluid is released from the inner mass when the shape memory member is heated to a second temperature.

A method for generating power in a wellbore includes moving an actuator; inducing an oscillating stress on a piezoelectric component with the actuator; and generating a voltage with the piezoelectric component in response to the induced stress on the piezoelectric component.

A coupler for gravel packing completions comprising an annular member having an upper end, a lower end, at least one flange disposed along an inner wall surface of the annular member intermediate the upper and lower ends, and at least one deformable portion is disclosed. The coupler may be used to connect one or more screens to a base pipe in a gravel packing completion by deforming the deformable portion such as by passing a swage over the outer wall surface of the annular member. In a similar manner, the coupler may also be used to connect a gravel packing completion component, such as an inflow control device to the base pipe of the gravel packing completion, to contemporaneously connect a screen section and a gravel packing completion component to the base pipe.

A downhole well tool comprises a seal ring secured along the outer surface of the downhole tool. The downhole tool expands the seal ring radially outward into sealing engagement with an outer tubular member in the well. The seal ring has an annular reinforcing element having an outer wall surface, an inner wall surface, and at least one hole disposed between the outer wall surface and the inner wall surface. At least one sealing material, either preformed or molded in place with the reinforcing element, is disposed along the outer wall surface, through each of the holes, and along at least a portion of the inner wall surface.
