Methods and systems for controlling a personal area network access device are disclosed herein. Aspects of the method may comprise receiving an application event associated with a particular application running on a complex Bluetooth&#xae; device that is running a plurality of simultaneous applications, and determining whether a low power mode is allowed by the particular application running on the complex Bluetooth&#xae; device. If the low power mode is allowed by the particular application running on the complex Bluetooth&#xae; device, the complex Bluetooth&#xae; device running the particular application may be configured to operate utilizing the allowed low power mode. The allowed low power mode may be switched by the complex Bluetooth&#xae; device based on the application event. An active mode may be switched from a current mode prior to switching to the allowed power mode based on the application event.

Methods and systems for processing data are disclosed herein and may include compressing audio information on-chip within a Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip utilizing an audio codec implemented within the Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip. The audio codec may be a low complexity sub-band codec (SBC). An audio stream with the audio information may be generated outside the Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip. The audio stream may be generated via an audio/video distribution transport protocol (AVDTP) external to the Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip. A data channel may be established by the Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip between a Bluetooth&#xae; enabled device and a peer Bluetooth&#xae; device, for communicating the established audio stream to the Bluetooth&#xae; transceiver chip for compression. The data channel may be established utilizing a logical link control and adaptation protocol (L2CAP) and/or an advanced audio distribution profile (A2DP).

Methods and systems for controlling a plurality of personal area network access devices are disclosed herein. In a personal area network device, a new connection is received from another personal area network device in a personal area network. The new connection is associated with a first application having a first role preference. It is determined whether the first role preference conflicts with a current role. It is determined whether the first role preference conflicts with a second role preference associated with a second application using the current role. The current role is switched to a role specified in the first role preference in response to determining that the first role preference conflicts with the current role and that the first role preference does not conflict with the second role preference.

A method and system that configure communication between devices in a network utilizing bluetooth technology, where one device may or may not support content protection, and another device may or may not support content protection. A first device may utilize a configuration that enables data communication via a bluetooth communication link with a second device based on whether the second device supports content protection. The content protected data communicated between the devices is based on the first device configuration. If the second device does not support content protection, the first device may utilize a configuration that does not require content protection for communicating data with the second device. A system and method according to the present invention allow two or more peer-to-peer wireless devices to automatically connect to each other with no knowledge or pre-configuration of client/server roles. According to a first aspect of the present invention, a wireless device performs inquiries at a random interval, and performs an inquiry scan and a page scan when not performing the inquiries. Upon receiving a first device address in response to one of the inquiries, the wireless device performs a first page using the device address to establish a connection. And upon receiving an inquiry during the inquiry scan, the wireless device responds with a second device address, and if a second page is received during the page scan, establishes a connection.

The line speed utilized by the Bluetooth&#xae; device may be dynamically adjusted based on the received Bluetooth&#xae; event associated with said Bluetooth device. The line speed may be dynamically adjusted utilizing a line speed algorithm. The line speed algorithm may comprise a variable bit rate coding algorithm. Encoded data may be transmitted by the Bluetooth&#xae; device utilizing the line speed. The encoded data may comprise encoded audio data. The line speed may be controlled based on a current line speed of the Bluetooth&#xae; device.
