Roadway resurfacing often requires removal of the existing asphalt from the roadway for reuse. One method of resurfacing a roadway is hot-in-place recycling. Hot-in-place recycling employs substantial heat to remove the oxidized or aged asphalt. This heat further oxidizes the asphalt, creating a material that lacks many desirable properties (e.g., flowability) and flexibility. The disclosure provides compositions and methods that enhance oxidized asphalt, making it more viable for use in resurfacing roadways. Accordingly, compositions comprising recycled asphalt pavement and a rejuvenating agent are disclosed. The compositions combine a rejuvenator and fresh asphalt flux to make a modified asphalt rejuvenator. The modified rejuvenator is then mixed with recycled asphalt pavement to form a rejuvenated asphalt composition.

Methods and compositions for asphalt rejuvenation

A shingle coating asphalt composition is provided that is produced from a paving grade asphalt. The shingle coating asphalt composition comprise a paving grade asphalt that has been overblown to achieve a first penetration value that is at or below about 15 dmm and a first softening point that is at least about 210&#xb0; F. The shingle coating composition may further include an additive that is included in an amount to achieve a second softening point that is less than about 230&#xb0; F. and a second penetration value that is between about 15 and 20 dmm. The additive may comprise at least one ester. The inventive shingle coating asphalt composition may be thermally stable at processing temperatures of at least 450&#xb0; F.

Use of an additive and paving grade asphalt in shingle coating asphalt composition manufacture

A sealant composition for roofing shingles that includes a base asphalt, a linear and/or a radial copolymer, oil, and a wax is provided. The linear copolymer has an A-B di-block or an A-B-A tri-block structure. The radial copolymer may have an (A-B)radial structure, where n is at least 4, or a tri-block (A-B-A) radial structure having from 4 to 8 arms. Blocks A and B may individually represent (1) styrene and butadiene or (2) styrene and isoprene. The oil is a petroleum-based oil that both 'softens' the asphalt and reduces the viscosity of the sealant composition. The wax may be a bis-stearamide wax. Additionally, the sealant composition may be reacted with elemental sulfur to crosslink the copolymer blend. The sealant composition seals at temperatures lower than conventional sealants and promotes the easy release of the shingle from a shingle bundle.

Sealant composition for releasable shingle

A laminated asphalt shingle including a base layer, a first decorative layer, and a second decorative layer is provided. The first decorative layer may be affixed to the base layer and to the second decorative layer by a flexible adhesive that permits the first decorative layer to move relative to both the base layer and the second decorative layer without de-bonding. The relative movement of the shingle layers permits the shingle to be folded over the ridge line of a roof without de-bonding or breaking the layers. Additionally, the relative movement of the layers when the shingle is installed over a ridge creates opposing transverse edges in which each layer is offset from the other layers as a result of the shingle bending about a different radius of curvature, thereby providing a dimensional appearance along the transverse edges.

A method of producing a roofing shingle coating asphalt from a non-coating grade asphalt feedstock includes the following steps. The non-coating grade asphalt feedstock is partially blown to lower its penetration to a first penetration that is within or close to a target penetration range of the coating asphalt, and to raise its softening point to a first softening point that is lower than a target softening point range of the coating asphalt. A wax is added to the partially blown non-coating grade asphalt to further raise its softening point to a second softening point that is within the target softening point range to produce the coating asphalt. The wax may also be added during the blowing process. Resulting roofing coating asphalt compositions may comprise a paving grade asphalt and a wax, and yet still has desirable penetration, softening point and viscosity.

A method of producing a roofing shingle coating asphalt from a non-coating grade asphalt feedstock includes the following steps. The non-coating grade asphalt feedstock is partially blown to lower its penetration to a first penetration that is within or close to a target penetration range of the coating asphalt, and to raise its softening point to a first softening point that is lower than a target softening point range of the coating asphalt. Then a wax is added to the partially blown non-coating grade asphalt to further raise its softening point to a second softening point that is within the target softening point range to produce the coating asphalt.

Method of producing roofing shingle coating asphalt from non-coating grade asphalt

In a process of producing a roofing shingle coating asphalt from a low flashpoint asphalt feedstock, an asphalt feedstock which has a low flashpoint of from 490&#xb0; F. (254&#xb0; C.) to 540&#xb0; F. (282&#xb0; C.) is partially blown, and wax is added to the asphalt feedstock. The process produces a coating asphalt having a low melt viscosity of from 50 cps to 150 cps at 400&#xb0; F. (204&#xb0; C.), a softening point of from 190&#xb0; F. (88&#xb0; C.) to 235&#xb0; F. (113&#xb0; C.) and a penetration of at least 15 dmm at 77&#xb0; F. (25&#xb0; C.). In another embodiment, the process produces a roofing shingle coating asphalt having good weatherability from a poor weathering asphalt feedstock. In a further embodiment, the process produces roofing shingles including a filled coating containing a poor tear filler without sacrificing the tear strength of the shingles.

A process of producing a roofing shingle coating asphalt from an asphalt feedstock includes the following steps. Wax and blowing catalyst are added to the asphalt feedstock. Then the asphalt feedstock is blown to produce the coating asphalt. The coating asphalt has a softening point within a range of from about 190&#xb0; F. (88&#xb0; C.) to about 235&#xb0; F. (113&#xb0; C.) and has a penetration of at least about 15 dmm at 77&#xb0; F. (25&#xb0; C.).
