An illumination device, system, and method are provided herein for emulating sunlight along a daytime or nighttime locus. Color temperature is determined using a first color temperature curve that includes data representative of a first color temperature as a function of a time of day. In response to a request to a change in brightness of one or more LED chains, a target color temperature output as a function of the current time of day is determined using a second color temperature curve based on the requested change in brightness. The second color temperature curve includes the target color temperature corresponding to the determined current time of day. The target color temperature output includes a lesser change in color temperature at solar noon than the change in color temperature at sunrise and sunset.

An illumination device and methods are provided herein for avoiding over-current and over-power conditions in one or more power converters included within the illumination device. The illumination device may include at least a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) chains, a driver circuit, at least one power converter, and a control circuit. In some embodiments, the control circuit may be generally configured for determining a maximum safe current level and/or a maximum safe power level attributed to the power converter(s) at a present operating temperature, and for adjusting respective drive currents supplied to the plurality of LED chains by the driver circuit, so as not to exceed the maximum safe current level or the maximum safe power level at the present operating temperature. In some embodiments, a temperature sensor may be included within the illumination device for measuring the operating temperature presently associated with the power converter(s).

Illumination device and method for avoiding an over-power or over-current condition in a power converter

An illumination device and method are provided for controlling light-emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs (specifically, the LED loads) are controlled, e.g., brightness and color of the LED loads, independent of a phase-cut dimmer applied to the AC mains feeding a DC power supply. The power supply is active dependent upon the duration of a conduction angle supplied from the dimmer. The power supply, however, produces drive currents that are independent from the conduction angle by using a two-stage power supply and a relatively slow and fast control loops that are controlled through a microprocessor-based control circuit. Parameters stored in the control circuit are drawn by the microprocessor to control the two-stage power supply to produce the drive currents independent and decoupled from the conduction angle yet dependent on the controller parameters.

Illumination device and method for decoupling power delivered to an LED load from a phase-cut dimming angle

A lighting device, such as a controllable light-emitting diode (LED) light source, may execute a self-calibration procedure to compensate for changes in an optical system of the lighting device that may have occurred after an initial factory calibration procedure. The lighting device may include an emitter, a detector that generates a detector signal in response to detected light, a memory that stores a curve defining an optical compensation value with respect to a measured forward voltage of the detector, and a control circuit configured to receive a measured value of a luminous flux of the light emitted by the emitter that may be determined in response to the detector signal and based on the optical compensation value. The control circuit may adjust the curve defining the optical compensation value in response to a difference between the measured value and an expected value of the luminous flux.

A lighting device, such as a light-emitting diode (LED) light source, may operate in an interim operable state to avoid and/or prevent undesirable characteristics in the light emitted by the lighting device (e.g., strobing and/or flickering of a brightness of the light and/or shifting or change of a color of the light). When operating in a normal state, the control circuit may determine if a measured value of a first operational characteristic (e.g., a forward voltage of an emitter of the lighting device) is outside of a range and operate in the interim operable state if the measured value of the first operational characteristic is outside of the range. When operating in the interim operable state, the control circuit may adjust a drive current for the emitter in response to a measured value of a second operational characteristic (e.g., a forward voltage of a detector of the lighting device).

An LED lamp and method are provided for autonomously changing the output brightness and color temperature of a plurality of LED strings to follow a first dimcurve in temporal synchronization with at least one other LED lamp. Synchronization is achieved based on a time of day determined using a clock signal. The output brightness and color temperature can transition from the first dimcurve to a second dimcurve over a predetermined number of scenes. The number of scenes is a function of a difference between the first dimcurve and the second dimcurve in at least one of the output brightness and the color temperature.

Illumination system and method that presents a natural show to emulate daylight conditions with smoothing dimcurve modification thereof

An illumination device and method are provided herein for calibrating individual LEDs in the illumination device to obtain a desired luminous flux and a desired chromaticity of the device over changes in drive current, temperature, and over time as the LEDs age. The calibration method may include subjecting the illumination device to a first ambient temperature, successively applying at least three different drive currents to a first LED to produce illumination at three or more different levels of brightness, obtaining a plurality of optical measurements from the illumination produced by the first LED at each of the at least three different drive currents, obtaining a plurality of electrical measurements from the photodetector and storing results of the obtaining steps within the illumination device to calibrate the first LED at the first ambient temperature. The plurality of optical measurements may generally include luminous flux and chromaticity, the plurality of electrical measurements may generally include induced photocurrents and forward voltages, and the calibration method steps may be repeated for each LED included within the illumination device and upon subjecting the illumination device to a second ambient temperature.

Illumination device and method for calibrating an illumination device over changes in temperature, drive current, and time

An illumination device and method is provided herein for calibrating individual LEDs and photodetector(s) included within the illumination device, so as to obtain a desired luminous flux and a desired chromaticity of the device over time as the LEDs age. Specifically, a calibration method is provided herein for characterizing each emission LED and each photodetector separately. The wavelength and intensity of the illumination produced by each emission LED is accurately characterized over a plurality of different drive currents and ambient temperatures, and at least a subset of the wavelength and intensity measurement values are stored with a storage medium of the illumination device for each emission LED. The responsivity of the photodetector is accurately characterized over emitter wavelength and photodetector junction temperature, and results of said characterization are stored with the storage medium.

LED illumination device and calibration method for accurately characterizing the emission LEDs and photodetector(s) included within the LED illumination device

Intelligent illumination device are disclosed that use components in an LED light to perform one or more of a wide variety of desirable lighting functions for very low cost. The LEDs that produce light can be periodically turned off momentarily, for example, for a duration that the human eye cannot perceive, in order for the light to receive commands optically. The optically transmitted commands can be sent to the light, for example, using a remove control device. The illumination device can use the LEDs that are currently off to receive the data and then configure the light accordingly, or to measure light. Such light can be ambient light for a photosensor function, or light from other LEDs in the illumination device to adjust the color mix.
