An example head-mounted display device includes a light projector, an optical assembly arranged to direct light from a light projector to a user, and an actuator module. The optical assembly includes a variable focus lens assembly including a rigid refractive component, a shaper ring defining an aperture, and a flexible lens membrane between the shaper ring and the rigid refractive component and covering the aperture. The refractive component, the shaper ring, and the lens membrane are arranged along an axis. The refractive component and the lens membrane define a chamber containing a volume of fluid. The actuator module is configured to adjust an optical power of the variable focus lens by moving the shaper ring relative to the refractive component along the axis, such that a curvature of the lens membrane in the aperture is modified.

Variable focus assemblies

Embodiments of this disclosure provides systems and methods for displays. In embodiments, a display system includes a frame, an eyepiece coupled to the frame, and a first adhesive bond disposed between the frame and the eyepiece. The eyepiece can include a light input region and a light output region. The first adhesive bond can be disposed along a first portion of a perimeter of the eyepiece, where the first portion of the perimeter of the eyepiece borders the light input region such that the first adhesive bond is configured to maintain a position of the light input region relative to the frame.

Athermalization concepts for polymer eyepieces used in augmented reality or mixed reality devices

A method of operating a dynamic eyepiece in an augmented reality headset includes producing first virtual content associated with a first depth plane, coupling the first virtual content into the dynamic eyepiece, and projecting the first virtual content through one or more waveguide layers of the dynamic eyepiece to an eye of a viewer. The one or more waveguide layers are characterized by a first surface profile. The method also includes modifying the one or more waveguide layers to be characterized by a second surface profile different from the first surface profile, producing second virtual content associated with a second depth plane, coupling the second virtual content into the dynamic eyepiece, and projecting the second virtual content through the one or more waveguide layers of the dynamic eyepiece to the eye of the viewer.

Methods and systems for augmented reality display with dynamic field of view

An annular axial flux motor includes a rotor mounted on an annular subsection of a rotatable cam ring and a stator mounted on an annular subsection of a carrier frame. The rotor includes two Halbach arrays of permanent magnets spaced from each other on the cam ring along an axial direction. The stator includes multiple phase electrical windings printed on multiple layers of a printed circuit board (PCB) that are stacked along the axial direction. The multiple layers are positioned between the Halbach arrays, with active side of the Halbach arrays facing to opposite sides of the multiple layers. The Halbach arrays are configured to generate a symmetrical magnetic field and the multiple phase electrical windings are configured to have a same rotor-dependent torque constant, such that the stator can generate a constant torque to rotate the rotor and the cam ring within a finite travel range.

Annular axial flux motors

A dynamic eyepiece for projecting an image to an eye of a viewer includes a waveguide layer having an input surface, an output surface opposing the input surface, and a periphery. The waveguide layer is configured to propagate light therein. The dynamic eyepiece also includes a mechanical structure coupled to at least a portion of the periphery of the waveguide layer. The mechanical structure is operable to apply a first mechanical force to the at least a portion of the periphery of the waveguide layer to impose a first surface profile on the output surface of the waveguide layer and apply a second mechanical force to the at least a portion of the periphery of the waveguide layer to impose a second surface profile different from the first surface profile on the output surface of the waveguide layer.

Electronic devices with antennas formed with optically-transparent films and related methods are provided. In this regard, a representative device includes a housing defining a cavity; a display disposed within the cavity; a cover disposed over the display and forming a portion of an exterior of the device; an optically transparent, electrically conductive film disposed within the cavity; and an antenna disposed within the cavity, the antenna being at least partially defined by the film, the film being operative as a ground plane for the antenna.

A representative electronic device includes: a housing that incorporates: a metal chassis having a base and a sidewall extending outwardly therefrom to define an interior, the chassis having an opening extending there through; a plastic part mechanically bonded to the metal of the chassis, the plastic part spanning the opening; and a support frame mounted at least partially within the housing such that the support frame increases rigidity of the housing.

Components and methods for forming such components with mechanically-bonded plastic are provided. A representative method includes: providing a metal chassis, the chassis having an opening extending through; placing the chassis in a mold; flowing plastic into the mold such that the plastic flows into the opening, the plastic being mechanically bonded to the metal of the chassis to form an integrated metal and plastic component; and removing the integrated metal and plastic component from the mold.

Components with mechanically-bonded plastic and methods for forming such components

A speaker module for a consumer electronics device encloses a speaker. The speaker module is sized to fit within a housing of the consumer electronics device and below an input control of the consumer electronics device. The speaker module is oriented so that the speaker projects audible sound through one or more interstitial gaps between the input control and the housing, or one or more through-holes formed in the input control.

A cantilever latch mechanism includes a base and a pair of arms extending from the base. The arms are spaced a distanced apart and selectively positionable between an open orientation wherein an opening is formed between the arms, and a closed orientation where the arms are positioned in a closer relation. Each of the arms may include a jaw extending inwardly into the opening. Preferably, the jaws are positioned on different vertical planes on each arm such that they overlap when the arms are in the closed orientation.

Cantilever latch mechanism

An electrical plug assembly includes a secondary plug assembly which releasably mates with a rotatable default plug assembly. The default plug assembly is moveable between a storage position and a deployed position and includes a plurality of default prongs of a first physical configuration. A casing associated with the default plug assembly includes a recess for receiving the default plug assembly in the storage position. The distinct secondary plug assembly includes a main body and a plurality of secondary prongs of a second physical configuration extending from the front of the main body. The secondary plug assembly attaches to the default prongs to assume a mated position, such as by sliding the secondary plug assembly rearwardly over the default prongs. A suitable latch and catch arrangement is used to releasably secure the secondary plug assembly to the default plug assembly. Preferably, the only connection between the secondary plug assembly and the casing is via the default plug assembly. In the mated position, the secondary plug assembly rotates with the default prongs and the secondary prongs are in electrical contact with the default prongs. The recess in the casing is preferably of a size and shape to substantially contain the secondary plug assembly in the mated position when the default prongs are rotated to the storage position. Accordingly, the secondary plug assembly may remain installed over the default prongs even when the default prongs are moved to the storage position, thereby lessening the likelihood that the secondary plug assembly will be lost and making it more convenient for carrying with the secondary plug assembly attached.

Swiveling electrical plug assembly

A battery pack for an electronic device including a latch assembly comprising a latching member, a biasing member, and an actuator. The latching member is movable between an extended position and a retracted position. The biasing member urges the latching member to the extended position so that when the battery pack is mounted to the electronic device, the latching member prevents its removal. To remove the battery pack, an actuator is provided to engage the latching member and push it downwardly to a retracted position. During assembly of the battery pack, the latching member can be pushed down to a retracted position allowing the actuator to move to an assembly position. In this position, the actuator is engaged by a retaining member on the battery case to hold the latching member and actuator in place during assembly.

Cam actuated latch for battery case

A modular assembly for centrally locating electrical connections of cellular telephone accessories to a cellular telephone near a cellular telephone cradle. An adapter module containing electronics for effectuating the connections is located and mounted beneath the cellular telephone cradle. The adapter contains a plurality of connections for connecting to the cellular telephone accessories.
