A clamshell half of a split ring mechanical seal face assembly comprises a split seal ring half having circumferential and proximal surfaces that are seated against corresponding radial and axial support surfaces of a holder half. At least one extending member extends from a hole in the proximal surface to an arcuate slot in the axial support surface, or vice-versa, and thereby radially constrains the split seal ring half to remain unitized with the holder half during clamshell assembly, while permitting rotation of the split seal ring half about a shaft axis over a limited range, which in embodiments is between 2 degrees and 20 degrees. Embodiments further include a secondary seal between the holder half and split seal ring half that frictionally resists displacement of the split seal ring half.

A bearing isolator seal provides enhanced coupling and stability of the rotor to the shaft, without undue seal enlargement, by including a plurality of drive O-rings in a common retention groove. In embodiments, the isolator seal accommodates axial rotor misalignment up to a maximum permitted axial misalignment, which can be at least 0.025&#x2033;. Embodiments include a labyrinth passage between the rotor and the stator configured to expel fluid by centrifugal force. Embodiments include a shut off feature that takes advantage of axial misalignment. Some embodiments include a unitization feature that holds the rotor and stator together during assembly. The unitization feature can include chamfers on rotor and stator extensions that facilitate assembly and disassembly when sufficient force is applied.

An improved mechanical face seal is provided which includes a pair of relatively rotatable seal rings having opposing seal faces. At least one of the seal faces includes a reverse trapezoidal face pattern having a sine wave depth profile wherein individual face features are circumferentially spaced over the seal face. The reverse trapezoidal face pattern serves to generate a hydrodynamic lift which provides a stable separation of the seal faces that permits formation of a fluid film between the seal faces. The individual trapezoidal grooves have a sinusoidal or similarly shaped depth profile wherein the trapezoid shape is arranged with the narrower edge communicating with the high pressure side of the seal, and the wider edge forms a circumferential dam region towards the low pressure side of the seal. Alternatively, the reverse trapezoidal face pattern may also be provided as a primary face pattern on a dry gas seal in combination with a secondary face pattern wherein the faces operate with a controlled gap under normal pressure conditions as well as when the pressure direction across the seal face is reversed.

A bearing isolator seal includes a rotor and stator wherein the stator has inboard and outboard radial projections which define a groove bounded by groove side faces and a groove bottom face. The rotor extends radially and then axially so as to lie closely adjacent to the terminal end of the outboard radial projection on the stator to define an entrance passageway. The bearing isolator seal includes a surface geometry which is believed to result in improved exclusion of contaminants, particularly from high velocity water spray, wherein the entrance passageway is angled to increase the rotational effects of exclusion during shaft rotation, and wherein the groove side faces are also angled to assist in redirecting spray and other contaminants away from the passageway.

A mechanical seal face has a significant increase in the ability of the seal to tolerate poor lubrication conditions such as dry running. The mechanical seal employs a thin, non-corrugated flat sheet of flexible thermally conductive graphite material placed between one of the mechanical seal faces and a metal surface such as a metal surface defined by a shaft sleeve or gland serving as a seal ring holder. The graphite sheet is located axially between a back face of the more thermally conductive mechanical seal ring and the metal face holder part. The conductive seal face material preferably is a ceramic or cermet material such as silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, aluminum oxide, or a metallic material such as stainless steel. Fluid pressure and spring forces are used to create a compressive load between the seal face, graphite sheet, and metal part to maximize continuous contact between the opposed faces of these parts and the opposite sides of the graphite sheet, and heat buildup at contacting seal faces flows away therefrom to the metal part through the thermally conductive sheet.
