A power conversion device may perform model-referenced power processing for multiple diverse power nodes. The power conversion device includes interconnects that couple power nodes connection ports to power converters The power converters include a dense tier of power converters sized to correct from varied power flow levels of a defined portion of a population of power nodes to interim power flows in accord with center values for that portion of power nodes. The center values are provided by a model of the power node diversity. The power converters also include a sparse tier. The sparse tier performs power processing to convert from the interim power flows generated by the dense tier to a uniform model-corrected target flow.

Power processing and energy storage

A power conversion device may perform model-referenced power processing for multiple heterogenous power nodes. The power conversion device includes interconnects that couple power nodes to power converters. The power converters may include a sparse set in which the number of power converters is dependent on the model of the power source heterogeneity. The sparse set performs power processing on the power from the power node to facilitate provision of a target power at a port of the power conversion device.

There is disclosed an electrical device and a method in which a battery is warmed up when operating from a sub-zero temperature. The electrical device may include a battery; an electrical storage element; and a battery management system including a controller in electrical communication with the battery and the electrical storage element. The controller can be configured to execute a program stored in the controller to shuttle energy between the battery and the electrical storage element until a power capability threshold of the battery has been reached, Shuttling the energy raises a temperature of the battery to meet power demand.

Energy conscious warm-up of lithium-ion cells from sub-zero temperatures

There is disclosed an electrical device including a battery, and a battery management system. The battery management system includes a controller in electrical communication with a pressure sensor to monitor the state of health of the battery. The controller applies a method for determining the state of health that uses a non-electrical (mechanical) signal of force measurements combined with incremental capacity analysis to estimate the capacity fading and other health indicators of the battery with better precision than existing methods. The pressure sensor may provide the force measurement signal to the controller, which may determine which incremental capacity curve based on force to use for the particular battery. The controller then executes a program utilizing the data from the pressure sensor and the stored incremental capacity curves based on force to estimate the capacity fading and signal a user with the state of health percentage.

State of battery health estimation based on swelling characteristics

An electrical device comprises a battery cell; a pressure sensor for measuring swelling forces of the battery cell, optionally with voltage, temperature and current sensors, and a battery management system including a controller. The controller executes a program to: (i) determine a reference swelling force corresponding to a reference electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at an earlier reference time, (ii) determine a second swelling force corresponding to a second electrical signal received from the pressure sensor at a later second time, and (iii) determine whether a risk of internal short circuit of the battery cell exists by comparing a reference level of the reference electrical signal and a signal representative of the second electrical signal. When the signal representative of the second electrical signal exceeds the reference level of the reference electrical signal by a threshold amount, a risk of internal short circuit of the cell exists.

Detection of an internal short circuit in a battery

A system includes a first energy storage device, a second energy storage device coupled to the first energy storage device and charged via a charging current from the first energy storage device, a power controller having a processor, a memory coupled to the processor and on which charging current instructions are stored, and a converter coupled to the processor and directed via switch control signals from the processor, and an output terminal via which power is provided to a load of the system. The converter is disposed between the first energy storage device and the output terminal. The converter is disposed between the first and second energy storage devices and configured to control a level of the charging current in accordance with the switch control signals. The charging current instructions are executed by the processor to cause the processor to generate the switch control signals such that the level of the charging current is regulated.

Hybrid energy storage

There is disclosed an electrical device including a battery pack, a pressure sensor for measuring a volume change of the battery pack, a voltage sensor in electrical communication with a positive terminal and a negative terminal of the battery pack, a temperature sensor positioned in a cell of the battery pack, and a battery management system. The battery management system includes a controller in electrical communication with the pressure sensor, the voltage sensor, and the temperature sensor, the controller being configured to execute a program stored in the controller to determine a state of charge percentage of the battery pack based on a pressure reading from the pressure sensor, a terminal voltage reading from the voltage sensor, and a temperature reading from the temperature sensor.
