Customized patient-specific instruments configured to be selectively attached at predetermined locations of a patient's bone are disclosed. The customized patient-specific instruments may include a polymeric body including a bone-facing surface having a customized patient-specific negative contour shaped to match and receive a corresponding positive contour of the patient's bone at the predetermined location. The customized patient-specific instruments also include a metallic coating that defines one or more cutting slots. A method of performing an orthopaedic surgical procedure is also disclosed.

Customized patient-specific surgical instruments and method

An orthopaedic prosthesis includes a femoral component comprising polymeric materials. The polymeric materials may include a polyaromatic ether or a polyacetal. The orthopaedic prosthesis may include a component having an articular layer and a support layer adjacent the articular layer. The support layer may include a reinforcement fiber. The orthopaedic prosthesis may be a knee prosthesis.

Composite orthopaedic prosthesis and method of making the same

An acetabular hip implant includes a plurality of rings secured to an acetabular shell component. A method of fabricating a customized, patient-specific version of such an implant is also disclosed.

Mechanically coupled revision hip system and method

A method of treating an articular surface of a metal orthopedic implant includes polishing the surface, blasting the surface with a blast media after the first polishing step and polishing the blasted surface of the metal orthopedic implant after the blasting step. The blasting step roughens the surface to create a surface skew R/Sdefined by peaks and valleys. The second polishing step reduces the surface skew to a negative skew R/Sand produces an average roughness R/Sthat is acceptable. Lubrication at the interface of the treated articular surface and the corresponding bearing articular surface is improved, thereby improving wear resistance. Both polishing steps may be performed by drag finishing the surface through an abrasive media.

Method of texturing prosthetic implants

Medical implants exhibiting optimized mechanical properties, and methods of making such implants, are disclosed. That is, the implants are fabricated of a porous metal substrate and include coating integrated over various areas so as to provide some added or desirable property or functionality to the implant. In one embodiment, the implant is an acetabular implant with a coating applied to an internal, concave wear surface which is sized and configured to receive a head of a femur. Typically, the coating is a ceramic incorporated onto the desired area of the implant via electrophoretic deposition.
