A method and system for dynamically transferring graphical image processing operations from a graphical processing unit (GPU) to a digital signal processor (DSP). The method includes estimating the number of operations needed for the processing a set of image data; determining the operational limits of a GPU and compare with estimated number of operations and if the operational limits are exceeded; transfer the processing operations to the DSP from the GPU. The transfer can include transferring a portion of executable code for performing the processing operations, and generating a replacement code for the GPU. The DSP can then process a portion of the image data before sending it to the GPU for further processing.

DGPU assist using DSP pre-processor system and method

A DSP device is disclosed having multiple DMA controllers with global DMA access to all volatile memory resources in the DSP device. In a preferred embodiment, each of the DMA controllers is coupled to each of the memory buses and is configured to control each of the memory buses. A memory bus multiplexer may be coupled between the subsystem memory bus and each of the DMA controllers, and an arbiter may be used to set the memory bus multiplexer so as to allow any one of the DMA controllers to control the memory bus. The memory bus may also be controlled by the host port interface via the memory bus multiplexer. A round-robin arbitration technique is used to provide each of the controllers and the host port interface fair access to the memory bus. This approach may advantageously provide increased flexibility in the use of DMA controllers to transfer data from place to place, with only a minimal increase in complexity.

Multicore DSP device having coupled subsystem memory buses for global DMA access

In a digital processing unit having a plurality of digital signal processors, a first digital signal processor can request a direct transfer of a signal group stored in the memory unit of a second digital signal processor. In order to insure that the second digital signal is active, a control signal is generated by the direct memory access controller of the first digital signal processor. The control signal is applied the directly to the memory access controller of the second digital signal processor. When the second digital signal processor is in an IDLE mode, the control signal activates the second digital signal processor.

As the digital signal processor has become more flexible, the direct memory access controller has assumed greater computational power to permit the core processing unit to perform its specialized processing without responding to signal transfer requests. Not only does the direct memory access controller control the exchange of signal groups between the memory unit and the core processing unit, but the direct memory access controller is also responsible for the transfer of signal groups within the digital signal processor that originate from the serial port, and the interface unit (the unit that implements the direct transfer of signal groups from the memory unit of one digital signal processor to a second signal processor). The direct memory access controller has programmable channels that permit the signal group source component to be coupled to the signal group destination component. The address unit of the direct memory access unit must be able to accommodate a plurality of addressing modes. An arbitration unit prevents conflict between the components. With respect to the host port interface unit, the exchange of the signal groups with the memory unit as performed by a direct transfer, the direct memory access controller preventing conflicting signal groups transfers.

Apparatus and method for the exchange of signal groups between a plurality of components in a digital signal processor having a direct memory access controller

A circuit for interfacing a processor with a host processor is provided that has a memory associated with the processor that is selectively accessible by either both the processors or by the host processor, a plurality of storage devices selectively interconnectable with the memory and host processor, and a logic circuit interconnected with the storage devices and processors for interconnecting at least a portion of the storage devices to the memory in response to signals from the processors. An integrated circuit is provided that has a microprocessor, a memory associated with said processor that is selectively accessible by said microprocessor or a host processor, a plurality of storage devices selectively interconnectable with said memory and said host processor, and a logic circuit interconnected with said storage devices and interconnectable with said processors for interconnecting at least a portion of said storage devices to said memory in response to signals from said processors.

Host port interface

A microprocessor 1 is described which includes a multi-channel serial port (MCSP) 120. MCSP 120 includes clock generation and frame sync generation circuitry 300, multi-channel selection circuitry 310, and companding circuitry 320. The clock generation and frame sync generation circuitry is configurable by means of a Serial Port Control Register SPCR, and Receive Control Register RCR, a Transmit Control Register XCR, a Sample Rate Generator Register SRGR, and Pin Control Register PCR. The multi-channel selection circuitry is configurable by means of a Multi-Channel Register MCR, a Receive Channel Enable Register RCER and a Transmit Channel Enable Register XCER. Companding circuitry 320 performs optional expansion or compression of received or transmitted data using .mu.-LAW or A-LAW, as selected by the Receive Control Register or the Transmit Control Register.

Multi-channel serial port with programmable features

A method is provided for forming non-overlapping clock signals 402 and 404 for an integrated circuit. A reference clock 300 whose frequency is twice that of a desired operating frequency for the integrated circuit is used. A master clock signal is formed which has a high pulse width T9a which is approximately the same as the high pulse width of the reference clock, but the frequency of the master clock is one half the frequency of the reference clock. Likewise, a slave clock signal is formed which has a high pulse width T10a which is approximately the same as the high pulse width of the reference clock, but the frequency of the slave clock is also one half the frequency of the reference clock. The high pulse width of either or both the master clock signal and slave clock signal is then widened by an analog delay means, but by an amount T13 and T14 which is less than the low pulse width of the reference clock, so that the master clock signal and the slave clock signal do not overlap each other. As the propagation time of circuit elements within the integrated circuit varies due to changes in operating temperature or voltage, the analog delay T13 and T14 is changed proportionally to compensate for the changes in propagation time of the circuit elements.

A clock acquisition subsystem for a data processing system has an interlocked clock multiplexer 100 for acquiring a clock source which is provided as clock signal 102 to the data processing system. Multiplexer 100 has at least two inputs 104 and 106 for clock source signals. Each clock source signal can be connected to one or more clock sources 710 and 720. Control register 730 specifies which clock source is to be selected by the multiplexer. The multiplexer has an interlocked synchronizer on each clock signal input so that when the multiplexer is switched, output clock signal 102 transitions cleanly from a first clock source to a second clock source without glitches or runt pulses. While the data processing system is in a deep sleep low power mode, wakeup logic 750 can provide wakeup signal 751 to power down select logic 740 which automatically selects secondary clock 720 until primary clock 710 is operational.

An electronic device for transferring data between a serial port and a memory of a CPU is provided having a plurality of data registers for transferring data between said serial port and said memory in response to a first set of control signals, a data bus connected to said registers and said memory for passing data to and from said memory in response to a portion of said first set of control signals, first control circuitry for generating said first set of control signals and for generating at least one interrupt to said CPU, at least one control register connected to said first control circuitry for providing mode control information to said first control circuitry, a plurality of address registers for storing data address, at least one address generator connected to said address registers for automatically generating addresses in response to a second set of control signals, an address bus connected to said address registers, and second control circuitry connected to said address generator, a portion of said control register and said first control circuitry for generating said second set of control signals.
