An apparatus, system, and method for contrast ratio adjustment in a multi-application augmented reality (AR) environment are described herein. In some aspects, methods include receiving first AR content and second AR content to be provided to a user of a head-mounted display. A combined target contrast ratio based at least in part on the first AR content and the second AR content is generated. The combined target contrast ratio is used to adjust a contrast ratio of the head-mounted display by adjusting a display brightness or adjusting a global dimming of a lens of the head-mounted display.

Contrast ratio adjustment in multi-application augmented reality environment

An optical device includes a first electrode and a medium that includes ferroelectric liquid crystals and chiral dopants. The medium is located adjacent to the first electrode. The optical device may also include a second electrode distinct and separate from the first electrode. The optical device may be used as an optical dimming device, controlling an amount light passing through the optical device based on a voltage gradient provided to the optical device.

An optical device includes a first set of one or more electrodes, a second set of one or more electrodes distinct and separate from the first set of one or more electrodes, and a medium that includes liquid crystal physical gel. And the example method includes causing display of the virtual content with the applied virtual lighting effect on a display of a computing device for displaying augmented reality, wherein the scene of the real-world environment is visible through the display.

Techniques for adaptively rendering virtual content n artificial reality environments based on ambient lighting of a real-world scene

A switchable polarizer includes a transparent layer and switchable material layer. The switchable material layer includes strips of a switchable material that are arranged to polarize incident light propagating through the transparent layer when the switchable material is heated to a threshold switching temperature. The incident light propagating through the transparent layer is unpolarized by the strips of the switchable material when the switchable material is below the threshold switching temperature.

A display device includes a display panel having a first emission region and one or more second emission regions disposed adjacent to the first emission region. The display device includes a plurality of light emitters, arranged in the first emission region, corresponding to a first color gamut and a plurality of light emitters, arranged in the one or more second emission regions, corresponding to a second color gamut that is distinct from the first color gamut. A method for making a display device with a plurality of light emitters corresponding to a first color gamut in a first emission region and a plurality of light emitters corresponding to a second color gamut in a second emission region is also described.

Color foveated display devices and methods of making the same

In one embodiment, a computing device may determine a virtual content to be displayed with a scene of a real-world environment. The device may generate an image depicting the virtual content. Using one or more sensors, the device may detect characteristics of the scene of the real-world environment. Based on the image and the characteristics of the scene, the device may determine that a visual enhancement is to be applied to the virtual content depicted in the image to enhance a contrast between the depicted virtual content and the scene. The device may generate a visually-enhanced image depicting the virtual content by applying the visual enhancement to the virtual content depicted in the image. The device may display the visually-enhanced image of the virtual content on a display of the computing device, wherein the scene of the real-world environment is visible through the display.

Adaptive rendering in artificial reality environments

A display device includes a display panel including a first array of light emitters having a first spacing in a first emission region of the display panel and a second array of light emitters having a second spacing in a second emission region of the display panel. The second spacing is distinct from the first spacing. The display device includes an optical filter including a first filter region and a second filter region. The first filter region changes distribution of first light from the first array of light emitters impinging on the first filter region so that the first light has a first distribution after passing through the first filter region. The second filter region changes distribution of second light from the second array of light emitters impinging on the second filter region so that the second light has a second distribution after passing through the second filter region.

Display devices and methods for processing light

An optical element includes a first boundary layer and a second boundary layer. A solution is disposed between the first boundary layer and the second boundary layer. The solution includes liquid crystals co-mingled with oblong photochromic dye molecules. The photochromic dye molecules are matched to the liquid crystals to offset a decrease in absorption of the photochromic dye molecules in response to a temperature increase of the photochromic dye molecules.

A device includes a polarization rotator configured to be switchable between operating in two switching states. The device also includes a controller configured to control the polarization rotator to switch between operating in the two switching states at a predetermined switching frequency, to thereby switch, a polarization of a component of an input light having an initial light intensity, between two orthogonal polarizations at the predetermined switching frequency. The device also includes a polarizer coupled with the polarization rotator, and configured to convert the input light transmitted through the polarization rotator into an output light having a light intensity reduced to a predetermined percentage of the initial light intensity of the input light.

Polarization-agnostic optical dimming device and optical assembly including the same

A device includes a display including multiple pixels, each pixel having an optical emitter to provide at least one light beam from an image. The device also includes an optical element to relay light beams from the display to a viewer through an eyebox, the eyebox limiting an area that includes a pupil of the viewer and a varifocal assembly to direct, through the eyebox, light beams having a first and second mutually orthogonal polarization states, according to a desired mode of operation of the device, and associated with a first and second field of view of the image in a focused mode of operation of the device, and an immersive mode of operation of the device, respectively. A memory storing instructions and a processor to execute the instructions to cause the device to perform a method for adjusting between the immersive mode and the focused mode are also provided.

Various aspects of the subject technology relate to systems, methods, and machine-readable media for changing perception of artificial reality content in a shared artificial reality environment. Various aspects may include determining user perception preferences associated with a user representation in the environment. Aspects may also include changing a perception parameter corresponding to the user representation based on the determined distances. Aspects may also include determining a visual style of the user representation based on an associated selected artificial reality application. Alternating perceived realities in a virtual world based on first person preferences and a relative coordinate system

A display device for projecting light to a viewer may include (1) a plurality of subpixels, in which subpixels may emit light of differing spectral distributions, (2) at least one light deviator disposed optically downstream from the plurality of subpixels, and (3) and a controller. The light emitted from each of the plurality of subpixels may be transmitted through and laterally shifted by the least one light deviator towards a viewer and the at least one light deviator may be mechanically rotatable by a force applied to an outer circumferential region of the at least one light deviator. The controller may control illumination of at least a subset of the plurality of subpixels in synchronization with rotation of the at least one light deviator. Various other apparatus, systems, and methods are also disclosed.
