A sensing apparatus can be configured to detect an edge of a paper that is received by an automated transaction machine (ATM). The paper can move along a path located inside the ATM, the path having opposite first and second sides. The sensing apparatus can include a light emitter and a light detector on the first side of the path, with the light emitter positioned so that it can emit light across the path to the second side. The light detector can be configured to detect light from the light emitter and can emit a signal corresponding to an amount of detected light. The sensing apparatus can also include a control circuit that can control a flow of power to the light emitter, and the control circuit can also receive the signal emitted by the sensor.

A first cassette may include multiple cavities with an internal transport, while a second cassette includes a single cavity. A translate/rotate mechanism translates and rotates the document while the translate/rotate mechanism transversely moves the document toward the center until another edge-detection sensor detects an edge of the document to create a parallel-aligned document. The control logic controls the plate(s) to centers the parallel-aligned document about the centerline to create a centered document.

A document delivery system within an automated transaction machine includes a shuttle for receiving a stack of documents. The shuttle is moveable from a dock location to a user interface location along a track system The shuttle may be utilized with a rear-load configuration or a front-load configuration in which the track system has a travel path from the dock location to the user interface location.

Each sheet is aligned with the sheet path and analyzed by analysis devices including at least one magnetic read head, an imager and/or a validation device. Sheets determined not to have at least one property of a genuine sheet are returned to a user of the machine. Sheets determined to have at least one property of genuine sheets are processed and stored in the machine. The machine operates to identify malfunctions of the deposit accepting device.

An automated banking machine system and method includes ATMs which accept checks and dispense cash to users. The ATMs are operated to acquire image and magnetic data from deposited checks to determine the genuineness of checks and the authority of a user to receive cash for such checks. Cash may be dispensed to the user from the ATM in exchange for the deposited check. The ATMs dispense cash responsive to communications with a transaction host.

An ATM can accept checks and dispense cash to users. An inkiet printhead can print indicia on accepted checks. An ink catcher is positioned on a side of a check path opposite to the printhead. The ink catcher includes a body portion, a projecting portion, and a head portion. The body portion has an ink holding interior area. The Projecting portion has an opening that is in fluid communication with the interior area. The head portion includes an opening, a wiper, and is rotatable relative to the projecting portion. The rotation enables the head portion opening to be aligned with the projecting portion opening. In this position, the aligned openings enable ink expelled from the printhead which does not strike a check to be captured in the interior area. Other head portion rotation enables the wiper member to clean the inkjet nozzles.
