Silicone oil-in-water emulsions containing a polysiloxane containing polymer is prepared by first preparing a polysiloxane containing polymer by the polymerization of siloxane containing monomers and/or oligomers in the presence of an inert organopoly siloxane and/or an organic fluid, a suitable catalyst and optionally an end-blocking agent; and quenching the reaction if required. If required one or more surfactants may be introduced into the polysiloxane containing polymer to form a homogenous oil phase. Water is then added (in an amount of 0.1-10 percent by weight based on total oil phase weight) to the homogenous oil phase to form a water-in-oil emulsion. Shear is applied to the water-in-oil emulsion to cause inversion of the water-in-oil emulsion to an oil-in-water emulsion. Finally, if required the oil-in-water emulsion can be diluted by adding more water.

Apparatus and method for increasing density of finely divided particulate matter

A process for making a flowable powdered base suitable for use in the formulation of liquid silicone rubber compositions that can be cured to form silicone elastomers. The process comprises (A) fluidizing a reinforcing silica filler in a high-shear mixer, (B) maintaining the content of the mixer at a temperature below about 60.degree. C. while adding to the mixer a silylating agent, a nitrogen containing compound to facilitate the silylation reaction, and water thereby forming an essentially homogeneous mixture comprising a treated reinforcing silica filler; (C) adding a polydiorganosiloxane having a viscosity of about 0.03 to 300 Pa.s at 25.degree. C. to the mixer and forming a flowable powdered base having an average particle size of from about 1 to 1000 microns, and (D) heating the flowable powdered base under conditions sufficient to remove volatiles.

Process for making powdered base for formulating curable liquid silicone

A platinum group-metal curing liquid silicone rubber compositions having improved physical properties such as tear and heat-aging, especially at durometers below about 35 and above about 65. The present inventors have unexpectedly discovered that the addition of diorganohydrogensiloxy end-blocked polydiorganosiloxanes and triorganosiloxy end-blocked polydiorganosiloxanes having a viscosity greater than about 10 Pa.cndot.s at 25.degree. C. to liquid silicone rubber compositions can provide for the described improved properties.

Use of high molecular weight organopolysiloxanes to improve physical

A platinum curing organosiloxane composition having improved hysteresis characteristics when cured. The composition requires the presence of a diorganovinylsiloxy terminated polydiorganosiloxane having a viscosity within a range of about 20 Pa.multidot.s to 200 Pa.multidot.s at 25.degree. C. and containing essentially no ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals bonded to non-terminal silicon atoms and a diorganovinylsiloxy terminated polydiorganosiloxane having a viscosity within a range of about 0.1 Pa.multidot.s to 200 Pa.multidot.s at 25.degree. C., where from 1 to 5 percent of the non-terminal repeating units of the siloxane comprise a vinyl radical. In addition, the present composition comprises 10 to 30 weight percent of a reinforcing silica filler that has been treated with hexamethyldisilazane and 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-divinyldisilazane, and an organohydrogen siloxane crosslinker comprising at least ten silicon-bonded hydrogen atoms per molecule.

Curable organosiloxane composition with improved hysteresis

The tear strength of cured organosiloxane elastomers can be increased and the compression set value reduced without adversely affecting other physical properties if the composition used to prepare the elastomer is curable by a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilation reaction and contains a mixture of two liquid diorganoalkenylsiloxy terminated polydiorganosiloxanes, one of which constitutes from 96 to 99.5 percent by weight of said mixture and contains the alkenyl radicals only at the terminal positions. The second polydiorganosiloxane contains both terminal alkenyl radicals and from 1 to 5 mole percent of alkenyl radicals on non-terminal repeating units.

Extrudable curable organosiloxane compositions

Extrudable organosiloxane compositions that cure by a hydrosilation reaction comprise a first polydiorganosiloxane containing alkenyl radicals only at the terminal positions of each molecule and a second polydiorganosiloxane containing alkenyl radicals on both terminal and non-terminal silicon atoms. When the alkenyl radicals on at least the second of the two polydiorganosiloxanes contain at least four carbon atoms the cure rate of the compositions is substantially increased relative to compositions wherein the alkenyl radicals on this polymer are vinyl.

Rapidly curable extrudable organosiloxane compositions

The presence of a vinyl-specific peroxide in liquid organosiloxane compositions curable to elastomers by a platinum-catalyzed hydrosiliation reaction imparts excellent recovery properties to the elastomers without requiring post-curing. To avoid premature curing the compositions are preferably stored and transported in at least two parts, where the organohydrogensiloxane curing agent and the hydrosilation catalyst are located in different parts of the composition.

Organosiloxane compositions yielding elastomers with improved recovery

Compositions yielding optically clear silicone elastomers are obtained by preparing a homogeneous mixture comprising a liquid polydiorganosiloxane containing at least two vinyl or other ethylenically unsaturated radicals per molecule and a finely divided silica filler treated with a hexaorganodisilazane and then adding additional hexaorganodisilazane in an amount equal to at least 5 percent of filler weight. The blending is preferably carried out using a high rate of shear and volatile materials are removed by heating the composition under reduced pressure.

Method for preparing clear polyorganosiloxane elastomers

The tear strength of cured organosiloxane elastomers can be increased without adversely affecting other physical properties if the composition used to prepare the elastomer is curable by a platinum-catalyzed hydrosilation reaction and contains a mixture of two liquid diorganovinylsiloxy terminated polydiorganosiloxanes, one of which constitutes from 70 to 95 percent by weight of said mixture and contains vinyl or other ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon radicals only at the terminal positions. The second polydiorganosiloxane contains both terminal vinyl radicals and from 1 to 5 mole percent of vinyl radicals on non-terminal repeating units.
