The invention provides a method of manufacturing a solid phase barite containing material for use in a wellbore. The method includes the steps of providing the barite containing material having relatively small particles with a particle size distribution of at least 50 vol % particles having a diameter in the range of 1 &#x3bc;m to 10 &#x3bc;m and at least 90 vol % particles having a diameter in the range of 4 &#x3bc;m to 20 &#x3bc;m; and contacting the barite containing material with a liquid in order to form relatively large particles having a particle size distribution with at least 90 vol % of the particles having a diameter of at least 30 &#x3bc;m. There is also described a method of treating a wellbore with a fluid including the barite containing material.

Additive for increasing the density of an oil-based fluid and fluid comprising such additive

Reduced abrasiveness with micronized weighting material

A method of increasing a rate of penetration when drilling as compared to drilling with a baseline drilling fluid comprising an API-grade barite weighting agent and having a given sag, settling rate, density, flow rate, and pressure drop through a wellbore, comprising: circulating a drilling fluid comprising a base fluid and a micronized weighting agent through the wellbore; wherein the drilling fluid is characterized as having an equivalent density, an equivalent or lower settling rate, and an equivalent or lower sag than the baseline drilling fluid; wherein the circulating is at a higher flow rate than the baseline drilling fluid flow rate; and wherein the circulating results in an equivalent or lower pressure drop through the wellbore.

Increased rate of penetration from low rheology wellbore fluids

A wellbore fluid having an oleaginous phase and an additive for increasing the density of the wellbore fluid. The additive comprises solid colloidal particles coated with a dispersant coated onto the colloidal particle during the comminution process of forming the particles. Exemplary starting materials for the colloidal particles include commonly known weighting agents including barite, calcium carbonate, dolomite, ilmenite, hematite or other iron ores, olivine, siderite, and strontium sulfate as well as mixture and combinations of these and other similar weighting materials. The dispersant in one illustrative embodiment, is selected from carboxylic acids of molecular weight of at least 150 Daltons. Alternatively, the dispersant coating may be made of compounds including oleic acid, polybasic fatty acids, alkylbenzene sulfonic acids, alkane sulfonic acids, linear alpha-olefin sulfonic acid or the alkaline earth metal salts of any of the above acids, and phospholipids as well as mixtures and combinations of these compounds. In another illustrative embodiment the dispersant is a polyacrylate ester. The illustrative polymeric dispersant should have an average molecular weight from about 10,000 Daltons to about 200,000 Daltons.

An additive that increases the density of fluids used in a wellbore during the construction or repair of oil, gas, injection, water, or geothermal wells comprises In one illustrative embodiment the additive comprises a weighting agent, and more preferably an ultra-fine weighting agent. Another embodiment includes a wellbore fluid containing an ultra-fine weighting agent that has an increased density with improved suspension stability without a significant viscosity increase. The wellbore fluid as described herein has rheological properties comparable to a conventional wellbore fluid. An illustrative embodiment of the claimed subject matter is further directed to a method for making the ultra-fine weighting agent and a method for using such ultra-fine weighting agent in a wellbore fluid. In one preferred embodiment the additive has a particle diameter between 4 &#x3bc;m to 15 &#x3bc;m. In another preferred embodiment, the additive has a Dof approximately 3 &#x3bc;m (1 &#x3bc;m to 6 &#x3bc;m). In another preferred embodiment the additive has a Dof approximately 6 &#x3bc;m (4 &#x3bc;m to 8 &#x3bc;m). The additive may be used in any wellbore fluid such as drilling, cementing, completion, packing, work-over (repairing), stimulation, well killing, and spacer fluid, as well as in a dense media separating fluid or in a ship's or other vehicle's ballast fluid.

Drilling well with drilling fluid of fluid phase and weighting agent

A wellbore fluid having an oleaginous phase and an additive for increasing the density of the wellbore fluid. The additive comprises solid colloidal particles coated with a dispersant during the comminution process of forming the particles. An additive that increases the density of fluids containing a sized barite weighting agent. The wellbore fluid has rheological properties comparable to a conventional wellbore fluids but does not exhibit problems with sag and resulting variations in density. An illustrative embodiment is directed to a method for making the sized barite weighting agent and a method for using such sized barite weighting agent in a wellbore fluid. In one preferred embodiment the sized barite weighting agent has a particle diameter between 4 &#x3bc;m to 15 &#x3bc;m In another preferred embodiment, the additive has a D(by weight) of approximately 1 &#x3bc;m to 6 &#x3bc;m. In another preferred embodiment the additive has a D(by weight) of approximately 4 &#x3bc;m to 8 &#x3bc;m. The additive may be used in any wellbore fluid such as drilling, cementing, completion, packing, work-over (repairing), stimulation, well killing, and spacer fluid.
