A scroll compressor includes a discharge valve assembly for blocking compressed refrigerant flow from the discharge chamber through the scroll members. This blocking of flow results in the elimination of reverse rotation at shut down. The discharge valve assembly includes a leakage path which allows a limited amount of refrigerant flow past the discharge valve to eliminate the forming of a vacuum during powered reverse rotation. In one embodiment, a valve located in the leakage path provides a time delay to optimize the performance of the discharge valve assembly.

Scroll machine with reverse rotation protection

A scroll-type machine has a motion controlling member for preventing relative rotation between a first and a second scroll member while allowing relative orbiting motion therebetween. The scroll-type machine includes a novel arrangement of a spring or other flexible member for biasing the motion controlling member in a specific direction. The biasing of the motion controlling member operates to reduce the mechanical impact noise or rattle which is caused by the vibration of the machine's operating components.

Scroll machine sound attenuation

A refrigeration compressor incorporating an improved suction muffler is disclosed. The suction muffler provides dual sound attenuating chambers within a single housing, which housing is secured to the suction inlet conduit extending between the motor cover and suction inlet for the compressor. Integrally formed openings in the sidewall of the conduit provide communication with each of the two chambers and the respective chambers may be tuned to attenuate different specific frequencies. Internal integrally formed baffles within each of the chambers serve to eliminate standing waves within the chambers as well as adding stiffness to the muffler.

Suction muffler

A compressor discharge gas muffler comprising a single expansion chamber and an impedence tube for attenuation the fundamental low frequency discharge gas pulses, and a side outlet positioned to attenuate higher frequencies. A method of attenuation is also disclosed.

Discharge muffler and method

A hermetic motor-compresosr having separate discharge cavities in the compressor body for each pumping cylinder, a common discharge gas plenum for the entire compressor, and an impedance tube between each cavity and said plenum, thereby signficantly improving the sound attentuation of discharge gas pulses.

Compressor discharge gas sound attenuation

An improved valve assembly is disclosed, in which the valve assembly is provided with noise attenuation and is especially well-suited for use in refrigeration compressors. The valve assembly includes a retainer member fixed to a valve plate having a flow opening therethrough with a movable valve member therein between the retainer member and the valve plate. The retainer member edges are spaced relatively close to the valve plate to define a relatively small effective flow area therebetween, with additional effective flow area being provided by one or more openings through the valve plate. This arrangement provides for rapid fluid pressurization in the area between the valve member and the retainer member during valve opening in order to minimize impact forces transmitted from the valve member to the retainer member, thereby reducing noise emanating from the valve assembly.

Compressor valve noise attenuation

An improved valve plate assembly is disclosed herein which is particularly well suited for use in compressors and particularly refrigeration compressors employing pressure responsive reed type valving. The present invention provides several arrangements whereby the velocity of valve member may be reduced as it moves into a closed position so as to substantially reduce the resulting noise generated therefrom.
