An apparatus for manufacturing strengthened glass containers, and more particularly the construction and operation of a cooling shroud in an apparatus for thermally strengthening glass containers in a glass container manufacturing line at a location intermediate the hot end and the cold end. Glass containers formed at an I. S. machine are conveyed through a special tempering Lehr that heats them uniformly to a high temperature that is short of temperatures at which they may become deformed. Subsequently, the glass containers are rapidly thermally strengthened in a cooling station in which the outer and inner surfaces including all areas of the glass containers are simultaneously cooled to a temperature below the Strain Point of the glass used in the glass containers, with the cooling shrouds being used to cool the outer surfaces of the glass containers.

A pusher mechanism for pushing bottles formed in an I.S. machine from a dead plate to a conveyor. The pusher mechanism includes a pusher finger assembly which is supported by a housing and is movable about an axis of support and about the parallel axis of rotation of the housing. The axis of the two drive gears for effecting these rotations are coaxial.

A blank mold valving system for supplying vacuum/counter blow air to a blank mold of an I.S. The system includes an exhaust valve displaceable between open to exhaust and closed positions, a vacuum valve displaceable between open to vacuum and open to counter blow positions, and a counter blow valve displaceable between closed and open to counter blow air positions. A control operates the exhaust, vacuum and counter blow valves in a first deenergized mode wherein the exhaust valve is in the open to exhaust position, the vacuum valve is in the open to counter blow position, and the counter blow valve is in the closed position; in a second vacuum mode wherein the exhaust valve is in the closed position, the vacuum valve is in the open to vacuum position, and the counter blow valve is in the closed position, and in a third counter blow mode wherein the exhaust valve is in the closed position, the vacuum valve is in the open to counter blow position, and the counter blow valve is in the open to counter blow position.

I.S. machine

An I.S. glass forming machine has a plurality of individual sections each including a section frame. A deflector adjuster support is secured to and extends vertically upwardly from each of the section frames and a deflector adjuster is mounted on each of the deflector adjuster supports.

A pneumatic cartridge valve has supply inlet and consumer outlet passages provided on the end face of a valve cylinder and a control knob by rotation of which either the flow of air to exhaust or the passage of air from the supply to the consumer may be adjusted.

An I.S. glass forming machine is disclosed which has a plurality of individual sections each having a parison mold including a cavity having a first vertical axis. There is a trough assembly for each of the mold cavities which includes a deflector defining a second vertical axis. A horizontal beam supported by vertical uprights extends over the individual sections. The horizontal beam has a plurality of vertical openings corresponding to the number of individual sections of the machine which are in substantial alignment with the vertical axis of corresponding parison mold cavities. A corresponding plurality of hangers each defining a third vertical axis. The hangers are secured within the vertical openings with the third vertical axis coincident with the first vertical axis of a corresponding parison mold cavity and the trough assemblies are supported on a corresponding hanger with the third vertical axis of the hanger coincident with the second vertical axis of the supported deflector.

A plunger base module for a selected number of vertically extending cylindrical plunger canisters each having a bottom surface and including a set of service conduits including plunger up, plunger down, and counterblow/vacuum or cooling, with each of the service conduits in a plunger canister having a selectively located inlet port communicating with the bottom surface of the plunger canister. The plunger base module includes a permanent plunger distribution base having a top surface and a plurality of sets of service conduits, each set including plunger up, plunger down, and counterblow/vacuum or cooling. Each plunger distribution base service conduit has an outlet port communicating with the top surface. A removable transition plate has a bottom surface for engaging the top surface of the plunger distribution base and a top surface. The transition plate has a number, equal to the number of plunger canisters, of sets of service conduits, each set including plunger up, plunger down, and counterblow/vacuum or cooling. Each of the service conduits in the transition plate has an inlet port in the transition plate bottom surface for communicating with a corresponding outlet port in the plunger distribution base and has an outlet port in the transition plate top surface selectively located to communicate with a corresponding inlet port in a plunger canister positioned on the transition plate. The plunger distribution base also includes a valve for selectively blocking the flow of the services to the transition plate.

An I.S. Machine for making glass bottles, having a plurality of sections, each having a blank station for forming a parison. Each section has a section frame having a top surface, and a plunger mechanism including at least one plunger canister having a lower cylinder and an upper flange. A horizontal mounting plate having a top surface and vertical openings for receiving the lower cylinder of each of the plunger canisters is fixedly secured on the top surface of the section frame. The section frame top surface has vertical openings for receiving the lower cylinders of each of the plunger canisters and the flange of the plunger mechanism is secured to the top surface of the mounting plate.

I. S. machine

A plunger mechanism comprising a vertically extending cylindrical plunger canister having a bottom surface and including a plurality of service air conduits with each conduit having an inlet port communicating with the bottom surface. A plunger distribution plate below said plunger canister having a top surface and including a corresponding plurality of service air conduits which are to be connected to the plunger canister service air conduits with each plunger distribution plate conduit having an outlet port communicating with the top surface. At least one outlet port of the plurality of service air conduits in the plunger distribution plate which are to be connected to the plunger canister service air conduits being axially offset from the corresponding inlet port of the plunger canister. A transition plate intermediate the plunger canister and the plunger distribution plate having a bottom surface for engaging the top surface of the plunger distribution plate and a top surface.
