The invention relates to a method for controlling the use of transmission resources, wherein transmission resources for a transmission between a first entity () and a second entity () can be used by at least a first connection () and a second connection (), comprising checking () whether QoS requirements of the first connection () can still be guaranteed when the transmission resources are jointly used by the first connection () and the second connection (), and controlling () the use of at least one portion of the transmission resources by at least one of the first () and second connections (), accordingly. The connections may for instance be packet-switched () and circuit-switched () connections in a General Packet Radio System that is capable of Dual Transfer Mode (DTM).

Controlling transmission resources in mobile radio systems with dualtransfer mode

The invention relates to a method for controlling the function of a mobile station in a packet switched communication network based on a cellular network, which communication network is arranged to transfer information between a base station and at least one wireless communication device by means of a radio channel, wherein to transfer information, a transmission power on a set level is used on the radio channel. Information divided into successive blocks (, B-B) is transmitted from the base station to the mobile station on the radio channel. In the method, the block also contains information (PR) relating to the power level of the transmission. In the method, a block (, B-B) that is transmitted repeatedly and at fixed intervals is transmitted with a fixed transmission power to establish a reference level.

Method for transmitting control information in a communication system

A method of synchronising radio signal transmission slots at a mobile station to radio signal reception slots at a base station subsystem to account for a propagation delay between the mobile station and the base station subsystem. The method is applicable to a GPRS packet switched cellular telephone network in which a downlink channel is defined for transmitting user data from the base station subsystem to the mobile station and an uplink channel is defined for transmitting user data from the mobile station to the base station subsystem. These channels comprise dynamically allocated time slots in a time division multiple access frame. An updated timing advance value indicative of the radio propagation delay between the mobile station and the base station subsystem at a given time is calculated at the base station once every 8 multiframes. The timing advance value is identified to the mobile station by a timing advance index previously allocated to the mobile station. The mobile station uses the timing advance value to advance transmission slots at the mobile station for both the uplink and downlink channels so that transmitted data is received at the base station subsystem in the allocated base station subsystem reception slots.

A method and apparatus implementing the method for controlling the use of idle frames by a mobile station operating in a wireless telecommunication network. A control unit of the mobile station comprises the information on activities that can be carried out during idle frames in accordance with the mobile station's operating mode. At each idle frame, the mobile station checks said operating mode and activities to be carried out and of the activities to be carried out, determines the one that has the highest priority on the basis of said operating mode. For example, if necessary, the number of idle frames used for synchronisation burst search can be arranged as high as possible and, thus, enhance synchronisation.
