A device is provided for supplying electrical current to an intervertebral disc. The device comprises a cannula having a proximal end and a distal end and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The distal end comprises a beveled tip for contacting a region of the intervertebral disc, and an electrode disposed within or on a surface of the cannula adjacent to the distal end. The electrode is configured to discharge the electrical current to the region of the intervertebral disc. Methods of diagnosing and/or treating discogenic back pain are also provided.

Devices and methods for the diagnosis and treatment of discogenic back pain

A method of delivering a therapeutic agent to a nucleus pulposus of an intervertebral disc is provided. The method comprises inserting a delivery tool containing the therapeutic agent through an anterior portion, a lateral portion, or an anterolateral portion of an annulus fibrosus and into the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc; and delivering the therapeutic agent to the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disc. Devices and kits are also provided.

Methods and devices for delivering therapeutic materials to the intervertebral disc

A device is provided for supplying electrical current to an intervertebral disc. The device comprises a cannula having a proximal end and a distal end and a longitudinal axis therebetween. The distal end comprises a beveled tip for contacting a region of the intervertebral disc, and an electrode disposed within or on a surface of the cannula adjacent to the distal end. The electrode is configured to discharge electrical current to the region of the intervertebral disc. Methods of diagnosing and/or treating discogenic back pain are also provided.

An approach is provided for delivering therapeutic materials to an intervertebral disc via a sub-ligamentous space. The approach includes positioning a tool at an interface of a longitudinal ligament and an outer surface of the intervertebral disc, in which the interface is the sub-ligamentous space. The tool may include a first needle and a second needle housed within the first needle. An insertion end of the first needle may include a shallow beveled end. The approach includes inserting the insertion end of the first needle into the sub-ligamentous space. The approach includes deploying the second needle from within the first needle into at least one of an annulus and a nucleus of the intervertebral disc. The approach includes delivering the therapeutic materials to the at least one of the annulus and the nucleus.

Effective implantable medical devices and methods for reducing and treating acute pain by providing local anesthesia and nerve blockade using an imidazoline compound, such as clonidine are provided. In some embodiments, there is an injectable pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of imidazoline compound in a liquid pharmaceutical carrier, where the imidazoline compound provides local anesthesia and nerve block to the target tissue site which is a dorsal root ganglion, peripheral nerve fiber and/or peripheral nerve root.

Effective treatments of pain for extended periods of time are provided. Through the administration of an effective amount of clonidine and a gamma-aminobutyric acid compound at or near a target site, one can relieve pain caused by diverse sources, including but not limited to spinal disc herniation (i.e. sciatica), spondilothesis, stenosis, discogenic back pain and joint pain, as well as pain that is incidental to surgery. When appropriate formulations are provided within biodegradable polymers, this relief can be continued for at least three days. In some embodiments, the relief can be for at least twenty-five days, at least fifty days, at least one hundred days, at least one hundred and thirty-five days or at least one hundred and eighty days.

Improved medical devices and methods are provided comprising an anabolic agent for healing an injury. These improved medical devices and methods can enhance healing in injuries from traumatic soft tissue injury, surgical injuries, burn, traumatic brain injuries, musculotendinous injuries, musculoskeletal conditions, bone injury or other injuries or maladies, which can be chronic or non-chronic in origin. In some embodiments, the medical device comprises a drug depot that releases the anabolic agent over at least 2 days to enhance healing of an injury.

These improved medical devices and methods can enhance wound healing in wounds from cuts, abrasions, lesions, burns including sunburn, surgical incisions, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, traumatic wounds, or other injuries or maladies, which can be chronic or non-chronic in origin.
