In this disclosure, a method or kit for using the method of extracting, concentrating, and detecting microbes from a sample is disclosed. The method disclosed herein use transition or rare earth metal-based magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) to extract viable microbes from a sample and to detect them via an amplification-based method and/or a non-amplification-based methods. The method and kit can be used in-field and on-site for detection of viable microbes in a sample within about an hour, without using any powered heat source or powered tool.

Capturing, concentrating, and detecting microbes in a sample using magnetic ionic liquids and recombinase polymerase amplification

A gas chromatographic (GC) column using a zwitterionic compound and methods of use thereof are disclosed herein. The volatile free acids were observed to strongly retain on these zwitterionic compounds-based columns with excellent peak symmetry. By carefully tuning the structures of these zwitterionic compounds, different selectivity toward volatile free acids was demonstrated. These stationary phases possess a wide working range with thermal stabilities at higher temperatures.

Zwitterionic compounds as gas chromatographic column stationary phases

In this disclosure, transition and rare earth metal-based magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) are successfully prepared in a two-step synthesis and used to extract viable bacteria from a liquid sample. The disclosed MILs are extremely hydrophobic MILs and were insoluble in aqueous solution at 0.01% (v/v). Furthermore, these MILs were miscible in a variety of polar and non-polar organic solvents. Moreover, these MILs possess low viscosity and increased magnetic susceptibility. These MILs possess unique characteristics that can have great potential uses in various chemical applications such as extraction solvents in LLE, liquid electrochromic materials (Co-based MILs), and novel reaction media for organic synthesis.

Described herein are methods for making and using magnetic ionic liquid that have at least one cationic component and at least one anionic component, where at least one of the cationic components or the anionic components is a paramagnetic component. The magnetic ionic liquids are capable of manipulation by an external magnetic field.

Magnetic ionic liquids, methods of making and uses thereof as solvents in the extraction and preservation of nucleic acids

Apparatus, methods, and systems for automated liquid droplet manipulation include an open droplet supporting surface. An actuator can translate the surface in space with at least one degree freedom of movement to influence movement of one or more droplets on the surface. In one embodiment, the surface is patterned with areas that attract the droplets and interstitial areas that repel the droplets to enhance transport of droplets. For example, for water-based droplets the attracting areas can be hydrophilic and the repelling hydrophobic. In one embodiment, the repelling areas are superhydrophobic. Electromechanical movement of the surface avoids expensive and complex microfluidic fabrication and components, and avoids electrowetting requirements.

The present invention relates to a method for lignocellulosic conversion to sugar using an ionic liquid pretreatment for the saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass. Thus, cellulose, hemicellulose, when hydrolyzed into their sugars, can be converted to ethanol fuel through well-established fermentation technologies. These sugars also form the feedstocks for production of a variety of chemical and polymers. The complex structure of the biomass required pretreatment to enable efficient saccharification of cellulose and hemicellulose components to their constituent sugars.
