In one embodiment, an endoscope has a proximal end portion opposite a distal end portion. A view port is included at the distal end portion to view an internal body region through a passageway of a patient's body. Also located at the distal end portion are one or more piezoelectric elements operable in one mode to determine position of the distal end portion relative to internal body region and operable in a second mode to ablate tissue of the internal body region. The endoscope carries a balloon positioned about the one or more piezoelectric elements to selectively hold the distal end portion in a desired position in the passageway.

Endoscopic medical treatment involving acoustic ablation

A piezoelectric buzzer includes a vibrating layer capable of withstanding temperatures in excess of 260&#xb0; C. for at least five minutes while still maintaining its ability to vibrate and produce a buzzing sound at a level of at least 80 dB, and a high temperature piezoelectric material having a Curie temperature in excess of 260&#xb0; C. and one or more of the following properties: a planar coupling coefficient (k) of at least about 0.5; a longitudinal coupling coefficient (k) of at least about 1500; and a mechanical quality factor (Q) of at least about 2000. The piezo material may have a combination of these properties such that the product (k)(k)(Q) is at least about 1.5&#xd7;10. The piezoelectric material may have a base formula of PbSr(MnSb)(ZrTi)Owith x ranging from 0.95 to 0.99, y ranging from 0.92 to 0.97, and z ranging from 0.45 to 0.55, and may further include dopants in the amounts of about 0.4% CeO, about 1% CuO, and about 4% NbO.

High temperature piezo buzzer

A tissue ablation apparatus is disclosed that includes an elongate, flexible device operable to be percutaneously place in vasculature of a patient. The device has an array of 8 or more tissue ablation elements carried on a flexible circuit substrate located at a distal end portion. A cable is also included that has a number of electrical conductors insulated from one another that are each electrically coupled to a different one of the elements. One or more connectors are electrically coupled to the cabling at a proximal end portion of the device.
