An improved fermentation process for preparing pseudomonic acid A (mupirocin) is disclosed. The metabolically controlled fermentation process provides culturing asp. strain in a submerged medium at a temperature within about 20-30&#xb0; C. The pH of the fermentation medium is regulated to be at about 5.5-6.0 by feeding the fermentation medium with an assimilable carbon source, a mineral salt, or an acidic/alkali solution. Accordingly, the resulting fermentation broth contains an increased yield of highly purified pseudomonic acid A as the main component. The pseudomonic acid B as an impurity in the fermentation broth is significantly decreased.

The present invention provides a fermentation process for producing lipstatin comprising the steps of: a) preparing a fermentation medium containing a lipstatin-producing microorganism comprising an oil and an assimilable carbon source, wherein the wt/wt ratio of oil and assimilable carbon source is regulated to achieve an optimal lipstatin biosynthesis by the microorganism; and b) feeding the fermentation medium with an emulsifier, wherein the emulsifier provides an optimal viscosity for the fermentation medium and optimal pH during the fermentation to permit fermentation for lipstatin production. The invention refers to a new microbial process for preparing .beta.,.delta.-dihydroxy-7-[1,2,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-2.6-dimethyl-8-(2-methy l-butyryloxy)-naphthalen-1-yl]-heptanoic acid .delta.-lactone of formula (I) and .beta.,.delta.-dihydroxy-7-[1,2,6,7,8,8a-hexahydro-2.6-dimethyl-8-(2-methy lbutyryloxy)-naphtalen-1-yl]-heptanoic acid of formula (II), ##STR1## by the aerobic fermentation of the submerged culture of an imperfect fungus strain biosynthesizing the above compounds, in a nutrient medium containing utilizable carbon and nitrogen sources as well as mineral salts, and by isolating the product of formula (I), which comprises cultivating a strain of the new Aspergillus obscurus fungus species producing the above compound(s) of formulas (I) and/or (II), in a temperature range of 25.degree. to 30.degree. C. and, if desired, separating the product(s) formed from the fermentation broth, then isolating it in the lactone form of formula (I) and, if desired, purifying the same.

Microbial process for preparing mevinolin by a strain of aspergillus

The invention relates to a microbial process for the production of immunosuppressive cyclosporine antibiotic complex or of its components, cyclosporine A, cyclosporine B and cyclosporine C, by the aerobic fermentation of a filamentous fungus strain biosynthesizing the above antibiotic(s) in a nutrient medium containing utilizable carbon and nitrogen sources as well as mineral salts, and by isolating the products formed, which comprises culturing a strain of the novel Tolypocladium varium fungus species producing the cyclosporine antibiotic complex, preferably tolypocladium varium sp. nov.
