A wireless access point (WAP) supports one or more physical layer (PHY) operational parameters which can be restricted from use to lessen congestion within a wireless network (WN). The WAP periodically transmits a management frame to enable one or more communication devices to establish and/or maintain communication with the WAP. The wireless network can restrict one or more of the one or more PHY operational parameters, such as PHY data rates to provide an example, that are supported by the WAP from being utilized for communicating the management frame. This restriction of the one or more PHY operational parameters allows the WAP to periodically transmit the management frame at an increased PHY data rate thereby decreasing time needed for communicating the management frame which can lessen the congestion within the WN.

Adaptive physical layer interface control for a wireless local area network

A wireless access point (WAP) determines whether to switch from one or more first communication channels to one or more second communication channels when the one or more first communication channels are experiencing congestion. The WAP determines an amount of congestion the one or more first communication channels are experiencing. When the one or more first communication channels are experiencing congestion, the WAP determines whether one or more communication devices can support, or reliably support, a channel switching announcement signal using the one or more first communication channels. If a sufficient number of communication devices from among the one or more communication devices can support, or reliably support, the channel switching announcement signal, the WAP broadcasts the channel switching announcement signal to the one or more communication devices to announce its intention to switch from the one or more first communication channels to the one or more second communication channels.

Dynamic communication channel switching in a wireless access point

A wireless access point (WAP) efficiently adjusts one or more operational parameters, such as transmission power, a data rate, a modulation scheme, and/or an encoding scheme to provide some examples, to provide efficient communication with one or more communication devices. This efficient allocation of the one or more operational parameters can represent a per-station allocation of the one or more operational parameters, a dynamic allocation of the one or more operational parameters, and/or a combination of the per-station allocation and the dynamic allocation. In the per-station allocation, the WAP determines and uses one or more values for the operational parameters for each of the one or more communication devices. In the dynamic allocation, the WAP monitors one or more distances between the WAP and one or more of the one or more communication devices. The WAP can continuously monitor, periodically monitor, or monitor over a discrete period of time the one or more distances. Thereafter, the WAP determines and uses one or more values for the operational parameters for each of the one or more communication devices based upon the one or more distances.

Operational parameter allocation in a wireless access point

A subscriber communicates over an IP-based wireless telecommunications network through an access point. Identifiers associated with the access point (e.g., MAC address IP address, FQDN . . . ) are stored in a database. Each access point is mapped into one or more service zones, where service zones are mapped to service types. The subscriber has a rate plan that is based on a selection of one or more service types. When a wireless connection between the subscriber and the IP-based wireless telecommunications network is established, the access point identifiers are used to retrieve a service zone ID from the database. Upon completion of the communication, a call detail record can be generated that includes the service zone ID for the communication. The billing system can then retrieve billing plan information to determine an appropriate rate for the subscriber based on the service zone ID.

System and method for rating an IP-based wireless telecommunication based on service type

A system for providing an IP-based wireless telecommunications device with access to an IP-based wireless telecommunications service provided by a carrier network includes an access point that sets up a radio link with the IP-based wireless telecommunications device and couples the IP-based wireless telecommunications device to the network. The system also includes a network controller in communication with the carrier network and the access point. The network controller is configured to receive data packets corresponding to the IP-based wireless telecommunications device at the access point. The network controller is also configured to accept/reject the provision of the IP-based wireless telecommunications service to the IP-based wireless telecommunications device based on an IP address or other unique identifier associated with the access point. In other examples, the system further includes a data store that associates IP addresses of access points (or other identifiers) with an indicator of a black or whitelisted status. System and method for authorizing access to an IP-based wireless telecommunications service

A system for managing access point functionally and configuration includes a server that is coupled to a computer network and configured to communicate with an access point via the computer network. The access point is configured to couple a mobile device to the computer network by providing a wireless link between the mobile device and the access point. The access point is further configured to produce a status point regarding the access point and the server is configured to receive the status report from the access point following a trigger event at the access point. In other examples, the server is further configured to transmit a response message and/or a configuration file to the access point in response to the status report that is received at the server. Other features and systems are also disclosed.

System and method for managing access point functionality and configuration
