A network architecture for Wireless Intranet Office (WIO) applications including a local radio network such as a wireless local area network (WLAN) which comprises a Wireless Mobile Center (WMC) arranged to serve as a WLAN access point; a GSM network which comprises a Mobile Station (MS) in a form of a dual-mode cellular phone to access both WLAN and GSM radio technologies, a Base Station (BS) arranged to convert a radio signal from the Mobile Station (MS) for communication, a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) arranged to establish call connection; and a Handover Module implemented in either the Mobile Station (MS) or the Wireless Mobile Center (WMC) for providing seamless mobility between the GSM network and the wireless LAN, when the Mobile Station (MS) roams between the GSM network and the wireless LAN.

The object of the invention is a method for controlling the power saving properties in a terminal, which utilizes cellular phone technology and short range radio frequency wireless communication features in order to increase the operative life of the batteries, and a terminal utilizing the method. In the method of the invention the activity state of the short range wireless communication utilization in the terminal determines the level of the short range wireless communication power save mode.

Mobile-to-mobile connections are being arranged in a wireless telecommunications system comprising at least one mobile station, base stations serving the mobile stations, and at least one gateway. The gateway controls the base stations connected to the gateway and performs a protocol conversion. For mobile-to-mobile connections, a second handover algorithm is stored in the gateway. The data transmitted between two mobile stations served by base stations connected to the same gateway is switched in the gateway without a protocol conversion. If a mobile station is engaged in a data transfer connection with another mobile station visiting the wireless telecommunications system, the mobile station is handed over, when necessary, to a base station proposed by a second handover algorithm.

An emulator functionality is provided at both ends of a satellite communication link that is used between wireless network cells inside a vehicle, such as an aircraft, and a terrestrial communication system. The emulator is capable of providing required state signalling without a connection between a base station of the wireless network inside the vehicle and a base station controller of the terrestrial communication system. In accordance with an exemplary embodiment of the invention the satellite communication link can be switched to an off-state when it is not needed for transferring calls or other information. A method and an apparatus in a short range wireless communication stores a list of keywords and a type list of information indicative of content and services available at an Access Point. A user terminal creates and stores a similar list of keyword and types. The user requests the keyword and types from the Access Point. This list is transmitted to the user within the service discovery protocol during connection set-up. The user Keyword list and Types are matched to the Access point Keywords and Types list to determine if a session should be established or terminated. The Access point may also connect to the terminal to obtain a list of the terminal Keywords and Types to determine if content is available to push to the terminal.
