The present disclosure relates to compounds of the formula wherein Rand A are certain substituents, Y is an ester group, a nitrile group or an amido group and Z is O, S or NR, and which compounds are, for example, useful as intermediates for pyrazole fungicides. The compounds of the present disclosure can be prepared by the reaction of a compound of formula R&#x2014;C(O)&#x2014;CHY, with an orthoformate HC&#x2014;(OR)in the presence of a base, especially in the presence of an amine, e.g. triethylamine.

Manufacture of 1-substituted methylidene compounds

A process for the manufacture of an ester or the respective free acid of a 1-substituted-3-fluoroalkyl-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid of formula (I), wherein in such formula (I), Y is H, F or an alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms which is optionally substituted by at least one halogen atom, an aralkyl group or an aryl group; Ris H or an organic residue; Ris H or an organic residue. Such process comprises submitting a compound of formula (II) to a reduction reaction, wherein in such formula (II), Y is the same as defined for formula (I); X is Cl, Br or I; R' is H or an organic residue; and R&#x2032; is H or an organic residue.
