The present invention relates to a multi-domain, specifically 4-domain, liquid crystal display and a method for manufacturing the same. In one aspect, the liquid crystal display includes a pair of opposed substrates and a liquid crystal injected and sealed between the substrates. A first region and a second region on the first substrate have different alignment directions due to a photosensitive alignment film formed on the first substrate. Each pixel on the second substrate exhibits four different liquid crystal alignment directions when an electric field is applied. This occurs because a fringe field is generated by a slit-patterned pixel electrode of the second substrate, and different alignment directions are formed in the first substrate.

Multi-domain liquid crystal display and method for manufacturing the same

A ferroelectric liquid crystal display and a fabricating method thereof that is capable of improving light efficiency by preventing light efficiency deterioration due to the low voltage holding ratio of a ferroelectric liquid crystal. The ferroelectric liquid crystal display supplies red, green and blue data signals to each of the liquid crystal cells and is in a stand-by state during a responding period of liquid crystal, and then sequentially generates red, green and blue lights corresponding to each of the red, green and blue data signals. With this configuration, deterioration in brightness due to the low voltage holding ratio of the ferroelectric liquid crystal can be prevented and the light efficiency can be increased.

A common-auxiliary electrode surrounds the pixel region on a same layer whereon the gate bus line is formed. A gate insulator and a passivation layer are formed over the whole first substrate. A pixel electrode, having an electric field inducing window in the inner part thereof, is formed in the pixel region. A light shielding layer is formed on the second substrate, a color filter is formed on the light shielding layer, a common electrode is formed on the color filter layer. An alignment layer is formed on at least one substrate between the first and second substrates.

A multi-domain liquid crystal display device includes first and second substrates facing each other and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates.
