A rechargeable battery includes: an electrode assembly comprising: a first electrode and a second electrode; a case comprising an opening at a side of the case, the case accommodating the electrode assembly; a cap assembly comprising a cap plate covering the opening of the case, a first terminal protruding out of the cap plate and electrically coupled to a first electrode, and a second terminal protruding out of the cap plate and electrically coupled to a second electrode; a first current collector coupled to a lower part of the cap assembly and having a first side electrically connected to the first terminal and a second side coupled to the first electrode; and a deformation preventer coupled to the lower part of the cap assembly and formed to accommodate a part of the first current collector.

An electrode assembly and a rechargeable battery having electrode tab are disclosed. In one aspect, the electrode assembly includes a first electrode and a second electrode which are wound with a separator placed therebetween The first electrode includes a first coated portion coated with an active material and a plurality of first electrode tabs T&#x2212;Tn protruding outwardly from the first coated portion, wherein n is a natural number greater than 1. The first electrode, when spread in a plane form, includes first to nth portions on which the first electrode tabs T&#x2212;Tn are respectively formed, wherein the first and nth portions of the first electrode respectively define the innermost and outermost portions thereof. Each of the first electrode tabs T&#x2212;Tn includes at least one tab, and wherein the number of the first electrode tab Tn is different from the number of each of the first electrode tabs T&#x2212;Tn&#x2212;1.

An electrode assembly and a rechargeable battery including the electrode assembly are disclosed. A secondary battery having a cap assembly, including an electrode assembly; a case in which the electrode assembly is located; a cap assembly having a cap plate coupled to and hermetically sealing the case. A terminal member has a head with a stepped protrusion penetrating the cap plate and insulated from the cap plate by an insulating member. The stepped protrusion presses the insulating member in multiple steps. The terminal member is connected to a positive or negative electrode terminal of the electrode assembly.

Active material for battery and method of preparing the same

The present invention relates to a negative active material for a lithium rechargeable battery and a method of preparing the same, and the negative active material prepared by coating a carbon source with a coating liquid, and drying the carbon source, and the negative active material comprises a core having a carbon source with surface-treatment layer formed on the surface of the core, the surface-treatment layer having at least one compound of coating element selected from the group cosnsisting of amorphous, semi crystalline, or crystalline hydroxides, oxyhydroxides, oxycarbonates, and hydroxidecarbonates. The present invention provides a negative active material coated with a surface-treatment layer of a coating-element-included hydroxide, a coating-element-included oxyhydroxide, a coating-element-included oxycarbonate, or a coating-element-included hydroxycarbonate, and thereby a battery having the negative active material has less change in thickness after expansion of the active material, that is, from 12.2% to 5.3%, and furthermore, cycle-life characteristics are improved (7% or more improvement at the 200th cycle) and voltage characteristics are improved (0.04 V or more improvement at the 200th cycle).

A lithium battery which has an anode, a cathode having a compound capable of intercalating and deintercalating lithium, a separator interposed between the cathode and the anode, and an electrolyte solution having an electrolyte solute dissolved in a nonaqueous solvent. The nonaqueous solvent includes a mixed solvent containing 8 to 15% by volume of ethylene carbonate, 10 to 35% by volume of &#x3b3;-butyrolactone, 35 to 65% by volume of at least one linear carbonate selected from the group consisting of dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, ethylmethyl carbonate, methylpropyl carbonate, ethylpropyl carbonate and methylbutyl carbonate and 8 to 15% by volume of fluorobenzene, and 0.5 to 9 parts by volume of vinylene carbonate based on 100 parts by volume of the mixed solvent. The nonaqueous solvent may further include 0.05 to 5 parts by volume of vinyl sulfone, isooxazole or a mixture thereof based on 100 parts by volume of the mixed solvent.
