A process that can be used to produce NaCN is provided. The process comprises contacting hydrogen cyanide with sodium hydroxide solution to produce a NaCN solution and crystallizing the NaCN solution wherein the process is carried out in the presence of an acid or a metal salt of the acid in which the acid has a pKa&#x2266;4.4. The NaCN crystals can be separated from the slurry and dried.

Sodium cyanide process

A process for purifying a nitrile such as acrylonitrile is disclosed. The process comprises (1) contacting a product mixture, which comprises acrylonitrile and hydrogen cyanide, with an acid or a precursor of the acid to produce an acid-treated product; and (2) recovering the nitrile from the acid-treated product. The product mixture can be produced by contacting ammonia with a hydrocarbon such as an olefin under a condition effective to produce a nitrile and hydrogen cyanide.

Nitrile process

A sodium cyanide composition having a paste-like consistency is provided which comprises sodium cyanide, a base, water, and a rheology modifier. Also provided are processes for producing and using the composition. The composition can be used in applications that require sodium cyanide solution.

Sodium cyanide paste composition

A process for purifying a nitrile such as acrylonitrile is disclosed. The process comprises (1) contacting a product mixture, which comprises acrylonitrile and hydrogen cyanide, with glycolic acid or a glycolic acid-generating compound to produce a glycolic acid-treated product; and (2) recovering the nitrile from the glycolic acid-treated product. The product mixture can be produced by contacting ammonia with an olefin under a condition effective to produce a nitrile and hydrogen cyanide.

A method for improving abrasion resistance of sodium perborate tetrahydrate crystals prepared by reacting sodium metaborate with hydrogen peroxide in an aqueous slurry crystal growth medium, the improvement including highly supersaturating the aqueous slurry crystal growth medium. Also, an agent such as an excess of caustic may be added to the aqueous crystal growth medium to limit the growth rate of individual crystals.

Production of sodium perborate crystals having improved abrasion

A process for manufacturing, shipping and unloading substantially solid, ice-like sodium cyanide dihydrate containing essentially no liquid water. A slurry of 58 weight percent or higher sodium cyanide is rapidly cooled to the anhydrous/dihydrate transition temperature while minimizing the settling out of sodium cyanide crystals to form the product in a container. Dissolution prior to unloading is by adding heat and water or dilute sodium cyanide solution.

Process for shipment of sodium cyanide slurries

A process for producing anhydrous sodium cyanide crystals by absorbing hydrogen cyanide synthesis gas that contains oxides of carbon and water in aqueous sodium hydroxide and crystallizing the sodium cyanide solution that results from the absorption. The sodium carbonate that forms in the absorption is not removed prior to crystallization.
